Ability Power, or AP, refers to the stat in League of Legends [1] that increases the effectiveness of abilities, usually those that deal magic damage or provide healing and shielding. League of Legends champions who are mages, enchanters, or assassins usually benefit from AP the most, though technically any champion can use it.
With that being said, increasing the AP of an ADC champion may be useless. After all, ADC champions usually rely on their auto-attacks, which aren’t affected by their AD stat. AP scales with certain abilities, increasing damage, healing, or shields. Items like Rabadon's Deathcap and Luden’s Tempest provide high AP. Unlike Attack Damage, or attack damage, which boosts basic attacks, AP mainly enhances spells.
Ability Power increases the strength of magic-based abilities, healing, and shields. You can get AP by buying items like Rabadon’s Deathcap, Luden’s Companion, or Shadowflame. Some runes, like Gathering Storm and Arcane Comet, also boost AP, so it’s always a good idea to check everything you have available before upgrading a champion.
Certain champions gain AP through their abilities, like Veigar, who stacks it over time. Leveling up and choosing the right runes and items will maximize your AP damage.
