Overtime: What is overtime in Rocket League?

Overtime is a phase in Rocket League [1] that triggers if the game is tied by the end of the match timer. The phase is a Sudden Death mode, where the timer runs infinitely, and the match doesn’t end until either team scores a goal, similar to the Golden Goal rule in soccer. Overtime is in every standard Rocket League mode, so every game has a definitive winner.

Players consider Overtime one of the most stressful moments in Rocket League because a single mistake from any player on either side can cause them to lose immediately, so they have to be smart and calculated. In professional play, the Overtime phase is one of the most enjoyable moments to watch because of the pressure and the match being very close.

What to do if you’re in an Overtime in Rocket League?

Overtime in Rocket League can give players lots of tension, so one of the first things you need to do is breathe and relax. By de-stressing yourself, you’ll be less likely to play erratically and make silly mistakes that can cost you the win. If you’re playing 2v2 or 3v3, calm down your teammates because getting tilted is a fast way to lose.

After that, play as strategically as possible. No matter what happens, never leave your defense alone. When you hit a shot, only follow it up if you’re 100% sure you’ll get the next shot before or at the same time as your opponent. If not, play behind and position in a way where you can rebuttal the enemy’s shot. In 2v2 and 3v3, always have at least one person playing near the goal, and try to demolish the enemy car without letting them destroy your vehicle.
