Gaben: Who is Gaben and why is he often mentioned in gaming?

Gabe Logan Newell [1], better known as Gaben, is an American businessman and the president of the video game company Valve [2]. He was born on November 3, 1962, in Colorado, United States, and went to Harvard University [3] where he ended up dropping out to work for Bill Gates at Microsoft.

His nickname, Gaben, originated from his work email. He has said many times that he's a fan of My Little Pony, and he is one of the few people who are openly critical of preserving the open nature of PC gaming.

Why is he often mentioned in the gaming community?

The reason Gaben is so well known in the gaming community is because of him being the founder of a little company you might have heard of called Valve, the company behind not only the Steam store but also insanely popular games such as Dota 2 and CS:GO.

People put him in high regard because of his contribution to the gaming industry, so much so that he was awarded the BAFTA Fellowship award [4] for it back in March of 2013, the same year he was added to the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.
