Sockets (PoE 2): What are sockets in Path of Exile 2?

Sockets in Path of Exile 2 ^[1] are essentially slots in which players fit socketable gear, including runes and Soul Cores. Runes and Soul Cores, in turn, can provide offensive or defensive modifiers, allowing players to make their characters stronger.

Since gear sockets are crucial for applying Soul Cores and runes, players should aim to maximize the number of sockets on their gear. The total amount of sockets on an item depends on what type of gear it is, like chest armor and two-handing weapons having two sockets, while smaller items have one. 

How to increase sockets in Path of Exile 2?

Players can increase sockets by using Artificer's Orbs on compatible weapons and armor, adding an extra socket to it. Larger items like chest armor can have up to two sockets, while most other items only get one. It’s important to note that while players can use Vaal Orbs to socket an item, it would also corrupt that item, so it’s a gamble.
