Spinbot: What does it mean to use a spinbot?

A spinbot is a type of cheat used in multiplayer games, specifically first-person shooters. In a spinbot, a person starts spinning around at a very fast speed and automatically aims and shoots at enemies. It’s the most blatant way of hacking because it’s something everyone can see and identify, and players who use it often only do it to ruin the experience of others. Spinbots are usually in games like Counter-Strike and Call of Duty ^[1].

What separates spinbots from other hacks like aimbots is that they help the cheater avoid bullets, too, making it essentially impossible for other people to kill them. Another thing spinbotting helps with is that it increases mobility since most spinbots help people bunny-hop their way through the map. Since it’s one of the most blatant ways to cheat, most people who use spinbots get banned immediately.

What to do when you encounter a person who’s using a spinbot?

One of the first things a person should do when encountering someone using a spinbot is to report them. It doesn’t matter if the spinbot is on one team or the other. By reporting a spinbotter, the game developers will look at that person more closely and issue a ban while also identifying how the spinbot was working so they can make their anti-cheat better.

If the spinbotter is on the player’s team, they should try to forfeit the match so that the enemy team doesn’t unfairly lose to the cheater. That way, the opponent team doesn’t feel as bad about encountering a cheater, and the hacker is less motivated to use it blatantly. Unfortunately, if the spinbotter is on the opposing team, there isn’t much a person can do besides reporting them and hoping the developers catch them.
