Rez: What does it mean to rez another player?

In video games, rez stands for revive or resurrect, referring to the ability to bring a downed or dead teammate back into the match, which also restores their health and lets them keep fighting. Resurrections are often in team-based games with supernatural traits like Overwatch, Apex Legends [1], and Valorant, whereas revives are in squad-based titles like Fortnite and PUBG [2]

Rez plays an essential role in games because they can single-handedly save rounds or team fights if done at the perfect time. Those who want to revive must know if it’s safe to rez and check if it’s worth reviving that person since it’s a powerful ability that usually takes a lot of time to recharge in games.

How to know when it’s a good time to rez?

It depends on the game. In Valorant, Sage can revive players using her ultimate, but it’s very costly, so they have to be careful about when to do it because they may not have the chance to use it for the entirety of a half. Sages should only rez when they know they’re in the clear and no enemies are nearby. If opponents are close, the Sage should put up a wall so the person doesn’t die immediately after getting revived.

The rez mechanic in Overwatch 2 is more lenient than Valorant. Mercy can revive players using her ability. Since it’s just an ability, she can use it every 30 seconds. Still, restoring takes a few seconds, which keeps Mercy in a single spot, so she should ensure that her teammates are nearby and can protect her from enemy fire so that she can rez without dying.
