Marvel Rivals [1] has a variety of excellent skins that players can get their hands on. This can be either by buying them using the many in-game currencies available to players or by earning them through an event. While most skins are usually static, ensuring they can’t be edited or tweaked, that isn’t true for every skin in the game.
Today, we want to go through everything players need to know about color customizations for skins in Marvel Rivals. This includes what these customizations are, how players can purchase them, and the skins that are currently available for color customization. Naturally, we’ll also highlight some skins that could potentially have alternate colors to ensure you know which skins to prioritize next.
So, without any more delay, here is everything to know about skin color customization in Marvel Rivals. Of course, if you’re someone who prefers spending your money on something that can actually help your gameplay, you can always hire a professional booster from Eloking instead to get your rank up.
What are color customizations in Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals allows players to customize character skins, but the system has some limits. Color changes are only available for specific skins chosen by the developers, so not every outfit supports customization. Additionally, it isn’t as though players can just change the skin to whatever color they want, as there are only a handful of pre-determined alternate colors available for select skins. To access these color options, players need to own the base skin to unlock select color variants for that specific skin.
Right now, only a few alternate costumes offer additional colors. It’s not confirmed whether default outfits will receive more options in the future. The current system gives some room for personalization, but it’s clearly tied to specific cosmetic choices rather than being available across the board.
It’s also unknown if default skins will eventually get these color customization options. For example, if The Hulk’s base skin got a red recolor, then how would that work? Would he just look like Red Hulk? Also, what about when he turned into Bruce Banner? Would he look more like General Ross to keep things consistent, or would he still just be Bruce Banner with a more red outfit?
Which color customizations are available in Marvel Rivals?
At the time of writing, only the first batch of skins has received alternate colors. These skins include the following:
Magik (Punkchild) - Rosy Resilience
Luna Snow (Mirae 2099) - Plasma Pulse
Psylocke (Vengeance) - Phantom Purple
Winter Soldier (Blood Soldier) - Winter's Wraith
Naturally, as more skins come out, the developer will likely give alternate colors for more character skins, especially considering some of the most popular characters don’t have alternate skins yet.
How to customize skin colors in Marvel Rivals?
Once you have a skin that supports recolors, you can view available recolors in the “Heroes” tab. Unlocking these allows you to change the skin’s base appearance, which affects not only the hero’s look but also their animations, MVP intros, and emotes. Basically, the alternate color will be applied wherever you can see the character in their skin.
An efficient way to get a skin with customization options is through the Pick-Up Bundle event. As you progress through this limited-time event, you’ll earn a Costume Coin, which can be used to unlock skins like Psylocke’s Vengeance outfit. While this reward doesn't come with a custom color immediately, it still gives you access to the base skin, opening up the chance to unlock recolors later.
What are Unstable Molecules in Marvel Rivals?
After purchasing a skin that supports recolors, unlocking a custom color in Marvel Rivals requires a special currency called Unstable Molecules. This currency isn’t tied to gameplay progression, meaning you won’t earn it through completing matches, leveling up, or other usual in-game activities. The only way to obtain Unstable Molecules is by converting gold Lattice at a 1:1 exchange rate, which ties this currency to real-money purchases.
Each customized color costs 600 Unstable Molecules to unlock. For reference, this is roughly two-thirds the price of a full Luxury Battle Pass. Because you can’t use Units or Chrono Tokens to buy custom colors, players are left with few options outside of spending real money to access them. This pricing structure makes custom color unlocks a more exclusive cosmetic choice within the game's economy.

FAQs
What are Unstable Molecules, and how do I obtain them?
Unstable Molecules are a special in-game currency introduced for purchasing alternate color palettes for skins. They are not earned through regular gameplay but are obtained by converting Lattice, the game's premium currency, at a 1:1 ratio. For example, if a color variant costs 600 Unstable Molecules, you'll need to convert 600 Lattice to make the purchase. Lattice can be acquired through the game's store or certain in-game events.
Are all skins eligible for color customization?
Currently, only select skins have alternate color palettes available for customization. Examples include Magik's "Punkchild" skin with the "Rosy Resilience" variant and Psylocke's "Vengeance" skin with the "Phantom Purple" variant. The developers have indicated plans to expand this feature to more skins in future updates, so it's advisable to check the Cosmetics tab periodically to see if new customization options have been added for your favorite characters.
