Competitive games have to tweak their playable characters and weapons to ensure things remain fair and relevant for the entire fanbase, and that’s also true for Marvel Rivals. NetEase released season 1.5 for the game that only added Human Torch and The Thing, but also buffed or nerfed a handful of playable heroes.
While most changes have been well-received by fans, that doesn’t stop others from pointing out subjective faults from the game. Case in point, the streamer Ninja, who rose to fame thanks to Fortnite, called out the Season 1.5 update. While some characters received much-needed buffs, others were hit with significant nerfs, leading to heated debates within the community.
Here’s what Ninja had to say about the Marvel Rivals update and why it’s so controversial.
What changed in the latest Marvel Rivals update?
The latest patch introduces a mix of hero enhancements and limitations, reshaping the current meta. Notable adjustments include:
Captain America: Improved survivability with enhanced movement and attack buffs.
Venom: Ultimate ability now recharges faster, making him even more threatening.
Cloak & Dagger: Their ultimate takes longer to charge, reducing their impact in team fights.
Storm: Long-range damage reduced, weakening her poke potential.
Iron Fist: Health and healing increased, sparking debates about his role in the meta.
These changes have led to a shifting battlefield, where Vanguards, traditionally tanky frontliners, are becoming even stronger, much to the frustration of some players.

Ninja Calls Out the Update for Over-Buffing Vanguards
Popular Fortnite streamer Ninja, who has recently shifted focus to Marvel Rivals, did not hold back his criticism of the latest update. In a recent stream, he expressed frustration with the game’s balance direction, particularly regarding the buffs to tanky heroes like Venom and Captain America.
At the 11-minute, 18-second mark of his latest video [1], Ninja voiced his frustration:
“You know what Marvel Rivals has done lately, which is really, really annoying? And this is not a good look. This is a terrible trend. First off, Vanguards did not need buffs. Tanks were f**ing busted already. I’m going to throw that out there.”*
Ninja's concerns stem from the idea that Vanguards were already dominant, and further buffs to heroes like Venom and Captain America have only widened the gap between tanks and other roles.
He also called out a worrying trend in Marvel Rivals:
“People started to learn how good these characters were—Captain America, Wolverine—and then they’re buffing them. Then everyone started to realize when Luna’s ult swaps to damage boosts, Venom one-shots through it, so people started playing Venom, and then they buffed his ultimate. Right as the meta changed, they buffed Venom!”
According to Ninja, the developers are reinforcing meta shifts by buffing already strong characters, instead of providing balance through new counters or strategic adjustments.
