Marvel Rivals won't have mid-season rank reset anymore

Competitive games tend to reset the ranks of their players every time a new season rolls around. There are multiple reasons for this, but it mostly all boils down to resetting the player’s ranks to ensure they have to climb the ranked leaderboards again. After all, having the same couple of players at the top wouldn’t be much fun.

However, some games take things a step further by implementing mid-season rank resets. Marvel Rivals ^[1] was planning to do the same, but fortunately, all the backlash made it so they won’t have mid-season rank resets anymore.

Marvel Rivals won't have mid-season ranked reset

Marvel Rivals initially had plans to reset every player’s ranks halfway through Season 1, but they reversed the decision after community backlash ^[2]. If the reset went through, it would’ve dropped every player by four divisions, forcing them to climb the ranks again. Numerous players were unhappy with the decision and criticized it, stating that ranking up takes time and effort.

After listening to the community, NetEase Games scrapped the reset idea within hours, allowing players to keep their ranks and scores when the second half of the season begins on February 21, 2025. "We received a wealth of feedback from the community," NetEase stated. "A common concern was the pressure associated with having a rank reset every half-season, which has made participating in a competitive mode less enjoyable."

New Marvel Rivals competitive rewards

Although ranks won’t be reset, players will still receive rewards based on their achievements. Players who reach Gold rank or higher will receive the Blood Shield Invisible Woman skin, while Crests of Honor rewards will be given to Grandmaster and above. People in the top 500 will get a special ‘One Above All’ crest.

"When the second half of the season begins, there will be no rank reset," NetEase confirmed. "Players will retain their ranks and scores. To earn new rewards, players need to complete 10 matches in Competitive mode." Other rewards, such as the new Gold rank costume, will be awarded to players at the end of the season.

Community backlash and response

Players were against the reset, stating it devalues progress and makes competitive mode frustrating. One fan said, "This is an extremely demotivating idea to rank reset every 45 days. This game is not a battle royale." Another added, "No rank resets. Stop resetting the ranks." This reaction forced the developers to change their decision quickly.

NetEase emphasized how it’s committed to player feedback and wants to improve Marvel Rivals based on what the community says. They said, "We strive to make Marvel Rivals the best game it can be, and the community is the driving force behind this mission!”
