How to add Rocket League to Steam

Rocket League is no longer available to buy on Steam after its move to the Epic Games Store in 2020. While new players must download the game through Epic’s platform, many still prefer using Steam’s features and interface. Fortunately, even though Rocket League isn’t listed on the Steam store, players can still add it to their Steam library as a non-Steam game.

Why isn't Rocket League on Steam?

Rocket League was removed from the Steam store in 2020 before transitioning to a free-to-play game under Epic Games. Therefore, players cannot purchase Rocket League using their Steam account unless they activate an existing and valid product key. 

Rocket League is an Epic Games Store exclusive, available as a free download through the EGS launcher or website. However, players who started playing after the free-to-play relaunch on EGS can create a working shortcut within their Steam library.

How to add Rocket League to Steam?

Players need to ensure that a few requirements are fulfilled if they want to add Rocket League to Steam. They must have a valid Steam and Epic Games account, and both launchers need to be installed and updated on their computer. Also, players must be logged in on both clients. Finally, Rocket League needs to be installed from the Epic Games store.

After fulfilling the requirements, players must create a basic Rocket League shortcut in Steam. They can do it by opening the Steam client, clicking on the “add a game” option in the bottom left corner, and selecting “add a non-Steam game.” Then, click browse and find the Rocket League executable path. After players find the Rocket League file, they need to select RocketLeague.exe, click “ok,” and select “add selected programs.”

Doing these will launch Rocket League in offline mode without connecting to servers or the player’s EGS account. Here’s what players need to do to fix this:

1. Open their Steam library and right-click the Rocket League shortcut.
2. Select “properties.”
3. Change the shortcut name to “Rocket League” without the quotes.
4. Replace the contents of the “target” text field into this: com.epicgames.launcher://apps/Sugar?action=launch&silent=true
5. If the Rocket League icon is missing, players can select “choose icon,” navigate to the game’s executable file, and select it.
6. Click “Close.”

How to add artwork to the Rocket League Steam shortcut

Although the shortcut should function normally, it doesn’t have the proper Steam library artwork. Players can download custom Rocket League artwork from multiple places online. Here’s how players can set images:

1. Right-click the shortcut, go to manage, and select “set custom artwork.” They can select their downloaded image to set it as their background.
2. Launch the game through the shortcut, then close it. It will appear in “recent games.” Right-click it there, choose ”manage”, and select “set custom artwork.” Then, select the desired image.
3. Players must go to their library in big picture mode and right-click on the Rocket League shortcut. Then, they must click on “organize” and select “change icon” to set their grid image.
4. Click the shortcut to open its library details page. Right-click the header area and select “set custom background.” Then, players must set their image.
5. Players must go to the library details page, right-click the header, and select “set custom logo.” Then they need to choose their logo file and adjust its position via “Adjust Logo Position.”

What are the limitations of the Rocket League Steam shortcut?

Since it’s a non-Steam game using an EGS URL, multiple Steam features won’t be usable. Things like the Steam overlay, including screenshots, will be overridden by the EGS overlay. Players won’t be able to track their playtime, get Steam achievements, progression, interact with the “show more details” button, or press no game info. 

Other details for the game, such as the store page, community hub, points shop, find groups, discussions, guides, workshop, support, and game reviews, will be inaccessible. Players won’t be able to access Steam workshop content directly, but they can add it manually through external downloads or BakkesMod.
