While older Pokémon games didn’t have any customization options aside from the initial gender question, that isn’t the case with Pokémon Legends: Z-A. This game lets players freely customize their character’s appearance, ensuring there’s more options for personalization.

To change your outfit in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, players must first progress in the main story until they’re asked to catch 5 Pokémon in Wild Zone 1. This will lead to players eventually meeting an NPC named Naveen, who will also unlock the option to change clothes from the pause menu.

How to unlock the ability to change looks in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

The ability to customize the protagonist’s appearance isn’t available from the beginning in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Players must first go through the first few parts of the main story to unlock this feature. It’s an unmissable tutorial event, meaning every player will automatically encounter it by playing the game normally very early on.

The process begins after the player catches five Pokémon in Wild Zone 1 for research purposes. After catching them, players will be instructed to go to the Pokémon Research Lab to speak with an NPC named Mable. After speaking with Mable, players will receive an objective to exit the Research Lab and proceed to Hotel Z to meet up with Taunie. An important cutscene will play after leaving the cutscene.

Players will encounter an NPC named Naveen during this cutscene, who is a member of Team MZ. Naveen will give the character a new hat. This interaction unlocks the Outfits & Looks option in the menu. From this point, players are free to customize their characters’ clothing and physical appearance whenever they want.

How to change outfits and looks in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Here are the steps that players must follow to change their clothes:

1. Open the pause menu by pressing the X button.
2. Press the - button to open the ‘Outfits & Looks’ menu.
3. This menu will open directly to the outfits section by default, where players can browse all of their available clothing options.
4. Players can use the L and R buttons to cycle through the different outfit options they have gotten.
5. Press the A button to equip the outfit that the player is hovering over.
6. After selecting the outfit, players must press the + button to confirm the change and make it the active outfit.
7. Exit out of the menu.

After following these steps, the main character will be wearing the new outfit the player had selected in the outfits menu.

How to get customization options in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?

Aside from finding outfits for the protagonist, players can also purchase them. There are various boutique shops across Lumiose City where players can buy new clothing items for their collection. Some outfits have multiple variants, providing different color schemes and designs for a single clothing item.

When the player has selected an outfit with different variants, these options will become visible at the bottom of the screen. Players can toggle between numerous color schemes and designs by pressing the - button when that outfit is selected. This option allows for more personalization without switching to a different outfit.

It’s important to note that changing hairstyles is different from changing clothes. The ‘Outfits & Looks’ menu doesn’t allow players to change their hairstyle. To change hairstyles, players must visit one of the four hair salons located in Lumiose City. The earliest one available is on Vernel Avenue, west of Hotel Z, where players can spend money to get a new haircut.
