Pokémon Legends: Z-A is finally out, and its Mega Pokémon-centered approach is already a hit with fans. While the game introduces a bunch of new Megas for players to fight with and against, it also introduces a new currency called Mega Shards that can be used for multiple things.
Mega Shards in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is a type of currency that helps players advance progression by purchasing Mega Stones and EXP Candy, making their Pokémon stronger. It can be acquired by shattering Mega Crystals scattered across the city.
Here’s everything to know about Mega Shards in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, including what they do and how to get them.
What are Mega Shards in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Mega shards are the essential currency for advanced progress in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. These mysterious stones are crystallized fragments of Mega Energy, appearing as distinct pink shards found within large “Mega Crystals” scattered across Lumiose City.
While Mega Shards are mainly used as currency to buy Mega Stones and valuable Exp. Candy, they’re also linked to a strange event known as “Rogue Mega Evolution”. Destroying these crystals benefits your inventory while also helping keep Lumiose City safe.

What to do with Mega shards in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
You can start hoarding Mega Shards early on, but they won’t be usable until you reach a key point in the main story. The ability to exchange these hard-earned shards is locked behind “Main Mission 10: The Secrets of Mega Evolution”. Completing this mission unlocks the central exchange facility, Quasartico Inc., normally available once you hit Rank F.
Once unlocked, Quasartico Inc. becomes your resource hub, allowing you to convert Mega Shards into two critical item categories, Mega Stones and Exp. Candy. Note that more powerful or late-game Mega Stones are locked behind further story progression, such as the Malamarite stone, which requires completing Mission 37.
How to get Mega Shards in Lumiose City
Your main way to collect Mega Shards is through hands-on exploration. Breaking apart the Mega Crystals, those bright pink rock formations containing the shards, by sending out your Pokémon [1]. These crystal clusters are easy to spot and can be found all across Lumiose City.
You can shatter the crystal using your Pokémon to collect the Mega Shards by following the steps below:
Call out your Pokémon.
Target the crystal using ZL.
Command a damaging move.
Each time you destroy a crystal, you’ll earn Mega Shards for your inventory, give XP to the Pokémon that did the work, and add charge to your Mega Power meter. Because many crystals are positioned on rooftops, ledges, or other out-of-reach areas, it’s best to use Pokémon with ranged attacks to gather shards more quickly and efficiently.
Best methods to farm Mega Shards fast in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Invest in a specific upgrade early, the Pink Canari Plush, to maximize your shard collection. You can buy this plush by trading Colorful Screws. You can find these Colorful Screws by doing parkour challenges and locating special purple Poké Balls scattered on scaffolding and rooftops throughout the city.
Maximizing the Pink Canari Plush dramatically increases the shards you get, potentially tripling or even quadrupling the drop rate from Mega Crystals. Once upgraded, the route to obtain the most shards is the Prism Tower circuit. Running laps around this tower and smashing crystals allows you to collect hundreds of Shards and Exp. Candies quickly.
It’s important to note that the clusters of crystals around the Prism Tower are only available during the main story and disappear in the post-game. Make sure you use this farming spot as much as possible before you finish the main campaign to stock up on resources.
Remember that the maximum capacity for Mega Shards is 999. If you get close to this limit, immediately spend your excess shards on Exp. Candy to ensure you don’t waste resources when you smash the next crystal.
Mega Shards are used to purchase Mega Stones and Exp. Candy at Quasartico Inc., helping you strengthen your Pokémon and unlock Mega Evolutions.
You get Mega Shards by shattering Mega Crystals found throughout Lumiose City. Send out your Pokémon to attack the crystals and collect the shards.
Upgrade the Pink Canari Plush to increase shard drops, then farm the Mega Crystals around Prism Tower before completing the main story.
You can exchange Mega Shards at Quasartico Inc. after completing Main Mission 10: The Secrets of Mega Evolution. This unlocks the ability to buy Mega Stones and Exp. Candy.
The maximum capacity for Mega Shards is 999. Spend them on Exp. Candy if you're close to the limit to avoid wasting any!
