Evolution has always been a major part of the Pokémon franchise. From evolving your first ever starter to discovering that most legendary Pokémon have the title because they don’t have any evolutions, nothing beats seeing the evolution animation. Of course, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is no different.
There are multiple ways to evolve Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. While the regular level-based evolutions are present, players must initiate and control these processes to take their Pokémon to the next stage. There’s also the matter of using certain evolutionary items to evolve Pokémon.
Here’s every way to evolve Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
How does the new evolution mechanic work in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Evolution happens automatically when a Pokémon reaches a certain level in most Pokémon games. However, in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, level-based evolutions aren’t triggered automatically, so players must take a few steps to initiate the evolution process. This change can be a bit confusing at first, especially if a Pokémon has strict evolution requirements, but the game provides a clear signal when a Pokémon is ready.
Once the player’s Pokémon has leveled up enough to meet its evolution level, or meets its requirements like time of day, friendship, or needing to be traded, there will be an evolution indicator on its profile. When this symbol, which is an up arrow, appears on their Pokémon’s icon, players can select the Pokémon from its menu or party. Doing this will display a prompt that lets players know they can evolve that Pokémon. The only thing left to do at this point is to confirm the evolution by selecting the “let it evolve” button and starting the process.
How to initiate and control the evolution
Once players select the “let it evolve” option, the evolution process will automatically start. If players choose to back out at this stage, the evolution process will be canceled. This system is useful because it removes the need for items like the Everstone to prevent evolution. If players don’t want to evolve their Pokémon, they can ignore the evolution process from their profile. It gives trainers control over when, or if, their Pokémon evolve, allowing them to keep a Pokémon in its current form for personal preference or strategic reasons.
After confirming the choice and entering the evolution screen, the player’s Pokémon [1] will start to evolve, and a short sequence will start. After a few seconds, the Pokémon will have evolved, and players will be able to use their new form for exploration and battles. New forms usually have increased stats, new abilities, and new types sometimes, making evolution a key part of strengthening the player’s team for upcoming challenges.

Special evolution cases and items
Most Pokémon can discover new moves through evolution, and evolving them is essential to complete the Pokedex. So, although players have the freedom to pick and choose which creatures they want to evolve and when, it’s crucial to know how to access the evolution process to fully complete the game and unlock a Pokémon’s full potential. This includes Pokemon that need specific conditions, such as having high friendship. When these bonus criteria are met, the evolution indicator will appear on the Pokémon’s profile, allowing them to trigger the evolution.
There are some situations where an evolution is triggered immediately and does not follow the manual process. The most common is when using an evolution stone. In these cases, the stone itself is usually the only evolution requirement, and it gets consumed when players use it, meaning the Pokémon will immediately start the transformation without them needing to find its profile and select the evolve option. Other Pokémon, like Haunter or Kadabra, can only evolve if they are traded. Players must remember to be sure of their choice before using any evolution items because these items don’t come back after they’re used.
