Level plays a critical role in every turn-based game, and the same applies to Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The game has a detailed rock, paper, scissors combat system, and oftentimes, the only thing that can help you win against a particularly strong enemy is having a higher level than theirs.
Fortunately, there are some reliable ways to level up fast in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. In the early games, players can use the Mega Shard to EXP Candy exchange or earn EXP by destroying barriers. In the post-game, players can use the Alpha Candy drop or the unique reset trick for each experience.
If you’re looking for ways to level up quickly in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, then keep reading because we have you covered.
Best ways to level up fast early in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
There are three dependable methods to gain consistent experience in the early and mid-game phases without engaging in challenging combat. These farming techniques are risk-free, effective, and ideal for leveling up, especially if you want to unlock certain moves or evolve your Pokémon.
The Mega Shard to EXP Candy exchange
The first approach, which focuses on converting gathered items into worthwhile experience boosts, is the Mega Shard to EXP Candy exchange. Mega Shards can be found all over Lumiose City, frequently close to important landmarks like the Prism Tower. They are simple to farm as you explore or move between areas because they respawn approximately every five minutes.
Once you unlock the Quasartico Inc. shop, you’ll be able to trade these shards for EXP Candies. At first, you can exchange them for Exp. Candy S at a rate of eight shards per candy, offering a consistent way to grow your team. After completing the main story, the shop’s inventory expands, giving access to larger candy types that make pushing your Pokémon to Level 100 much easier.
Taking advantage of the Battle Zone reset mechanic
The Z-A Royale tournament is one of the best ways to earn a large amount of trainer EXP. These battles take place in special Battle Zones, which are easy to spot thanks to their red holographic fences scattered across Lumiose City.
Since Battle Zones are only active at night, you’ll need to adjust the time to keep the fights going. To do this, simply sit on a bench or rest at a nearby bed, often found near Pokémon Centers, and choose the “Rest until nighttime” option. This instantly resets the world and causes all standard Z-A Royale trainers to reappear, allowing you to start another round of battles.
Using this method creates what players call the Battle Loop, letting you chain together anywhere from ten to twenty-five trainer fights in a single in-game night. Higher-level trainers, who are frequently found training on rooftops or hidden away in more difficult locations, should be given priority if you want the best rewards.
Earn extra EXP by destroying barriers
Early to mid-game players who wish to collect consistent experience while exploring Lumiose City will find this method particularly helpful. Certain Pokémon moves can be used to remove a variety of environmental obstacles in the city. Each time you remove one, your Pokémon gains a small but consistent amount of EXP.
For example, boulders and crystal chunks can be broken with “Rock Smash”, and the latter may even drop valuable Mega Crystals. Any Fire-type move, like "Ember," can burn away brambles and thorns, while Water-type attacks, like "Water Gun," can wash away poisonous sludge or gunk. You can continuously gain experience without stopping for specific grinding sessions if you maintain a flexible team prepared for these challenges.
How to level up fast in the Pokémon Legends: Z-A post-game
For reaching Level 100, no method is faster or more rewarding than repeatedly defeating and capturing Alpha Pokémon.
1. The Alpha Candy drop
Alpha Pokémon are intimidatingly large, red-eyed variants found across Lumiose’s Wild Zones. More importantly, they have a high chance of dropping the powerful Exp. Candy L and Exp. Candy XL, which provides the largest burst of experience.
2. Wild Zone 20 Route
The definitive endgame farming location is Wild Zone 20, an area unlocked late in the campaign. This zone features static Alpha spawns at Level 63 or higher, including powerhouses like Metagross, Clefable, Diggersby, and Garchomp.
3. The reset trick
After clearing Wild Zone 20, you must force the Alphas to respawn. The fastest way is to use the Fast Travel Reset Technique. To do this, simply fast travel to a distant location, heal your time, and then immediately fast travel back to Wild Zone 20 to reset the Alpha spawns. Repeat this loop to generate an endless supply of high-level EXP Candies.

How to get EXP multipliers in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Before you start grinding seriously, you should stack important multipliers that permanently boost all the experience you gain. Getting these early on makes every battle and capture more rewarding and saves you a lot of time later in the game.
Obtaining the Lucky Egg for the EXP boost
One of the most important items is the Lucky Egg. This handy tool greatly increases the EXP your Pokémon gain from every fight and capture, making it one of the best early-game investments you can get. You can obtain the Lucky Egg by completing Side Mission 109: “Wondrous Self-Healing Pokémon”, which is typically available near Vert Pokémon Center later in the campaign. Keep progressing through the main story until you unlock this mission, and you can add the Lucky Egg to your inventory.
Don’t just defeat Pokémon, catch them too
Catching Pokémon rather than just beating them is another important piece of advice. When you capture wild Pokémon instead of just knocking them out, you get a notably higher amount of experience points. You should use a high-quality Poké Ball to catch the wild Pokémon after weakening it and giving it a status effect like Sleep or Paralysis to maximize the use of this mechanic. You gain the capture bonus and the standard battle experience by doing this, which maximizes your overall gains.
