English may be the universally recognized language, but some players may want to play their favorite games in their language of choice. While most games let players freely and easily change their language, League of Legends [1] isn't the same. The game requires players to utilize different steps depending on what they want to change.
The first is Riot Client language, which covers menus, champion descriptions, and the in-game UI. Doing this involves a few quick steps from the in-game client. However, the actual in-game language, which includes audio files for champion voice lines, interactions, and announcer lines, involves a manual setup, tweaking in-game files, and using command-line prompts.
So, without further ado, here’s how you can change your language in League of Legends.
How to change the League of Legends text language
Changing the text language through the Riot Client will update menus, descriptions, and overall interface to match your selected language. Doing this is easy, but there is a catch: the method is only available in certain regions, and the list of supported languages will depend on where your account is registered. To try it out, follow these steps:
Launch the Riot Client without logging in, and click the gear icon in the top-right corner to open the settings menu.
On the left side, select League of Legends to see a dropdown list of available languages.
Choose your preferred one from the list available for your region, and hit the Repair. Button, letting the Riot Client reconfigure the game files.
Finally, restart the Riot Client, and you are good to go.
This process easily switches champion names, item details, and UI text into another language, like French, German, or Spanish. Keep in mind, this does not include in-game voice lines or audio. If you wish to change that, too, you need to take a slightly different route with a few extra steps.

How to change the League of Legends audio language
This manual method helps if you want to go further and hear the champions speak another language. It involves a manual setup, tweaking in-game files, and using command-line prompts. That is because Riot has not added an official way to change it through the client.
Open your League of Legends installation folder. Check the default path C:Riot GamesLeague of Legends if you can not find it.
Scroll down and locate LeagueClient.exe, right-click it, and select Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
Right-click that shortcut on your desktop, head to Properties, and go to the Target field to see the game’s executable path in quotes.
Add a space after the path and paste the following: --locale=XX_XX. Replace XX_XX with the code of the language you want to change to. Here are a few you can swap in:
ja_JP: Japanese
zh_CN: Chinese
zh_TW: Taiwanese
es_ES: Spanish (Spain)
es_MX: Spanish (Latin America)
fr_FR: French
de_DE: German
it_IT: Italian
pl_PL: Polish
ro_RO: Romanian
el_GR: Greek
pt_BR: Portuguese
hu_HU: Hungarian
ru_RU: Russian
tr_TR: Turkish
The updated path should look something like this: "C:Riot GamesLeague of LegendsLeagueClient.exe" --locale=ko_KR
Once it looks right, hit Apply and OK, launch League using that shortcut, and you are good to go.
Afterwards, perform one additional quick step before starting.
Open Riot Client and click the profile icon.
Go to Settings > Riot Client, and uncheck Open Riot Client on startup.
Ensure the exit application option under Close Window is selected.
Doing so prevents the client from overriding any changes when it starts. We also recommend backing up your League of Legends installation folder before doing this, just in case a future update resets or overrides your custom language settings. It all might seem a bit technical, but the result is a much more personalized League experience.
Can this method get you banned in League of Legends?
It's completely fair to be skeptical when tampering with game files, especially when Riot has a strict policy on modifying the client. Their rules are in place to stop cheating and maintain fair play, so the fear of getting banned is valid. The good news is that players have used it for quite some time without any ban reports. It is likely because swapping out voice-overs for a different language offers no competitive advantage.
That said, caution is still key. While the tweak is limited to language settings, you are still at risk of potentially making unwanted changes. Ensure you only change the locale command line, and leave other folders and settings untouched. Accidental changes or deletions could break your client or trigger something that raises red flags. Back up your League folder, and avoid any third-party modifications to stay out of trouble. As long as you keep it clean, you should be just fine.
FAQs
What languages is League of Legends officially available in?
League of Legends supports a wide range of languages since its player base is worldwide. Some of the most common include English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Riot Games typically offers full support for the primary languages of each region.
Will changing my League of Legends language affect matchmaking or gameplay?
Changing your in-game language only changes the text and voiceovers. Matchmaking is still based on your region and MMR, not your language settings. However, communication with teammates may be easier if you’re using a language that’s common in your region.
