How to counter Phoenix in Marvel Rivals

Marvel Rivals [1] continues to release new characters for players to try, though not all of them are easy to counter. For example, Phoenix is a bit of an anomaly, since some players have a lot of difficulty with countering her, even if they know how her abilities work.
Phoenix is one of the most explosive characters in Marvel Rivals, capable of turning fights upside down with just one ability. Her Spark mechanic, flying mobility, and clone tricks make her hard to pin down and even harder to survive against. But she’s not unbeatable. If you understand her kit and play around her cooldowns, you can shut her down before she takes over a fight.
Here’s how you can consistently counter Phoenix in Marvel Rivals to start stacking those wins. If you want someone to teach you the ropes, then we recommend you play with a professional Marvel Rivals player to ensure you have someone to guide you properly.
What abilities does Phoenix have in Marvel Rivals?
Endsong Inferno (Ultimate):
When Phoenix unleashes Endsong Inferno, she can fly freely for 20 seconds. As she dashes through enemies, she creates smaller explosions. But the big moment is her landing, where she slams down with a massive blast that shatters enemy summons, breaks all shields, and removes any bonus health. This ultimate can destroy grouped teams or objective pushes and completely negate protective abilities. So, if you see it coming, try to avoid it or shut it down fast.
Telekinesis Burst (RMB): Phoenix’s Telekinesis Burst lets her mark an area and then hit it with three successive explosions. The first explosion will briefly stun enemies, and the next two will slow them down. Each blast also applies a “Spark” stack. This ability is key for Phoenix to pin down enemies and start her big Spark damage. You’ll want to watch for her casting this, as it can be used to group enemies and set them up for a lot of chain damage.
Telepathic Illusion (Shift):
When Phoenix uses her dash, she quickly zips a short distance, leaving a clone behind which then explodes for area damage. Be careful when she dashes either into or away from a fight, as that exploding clone adds a “Spark” to nearby enemies, which can lead to even more damage from her abilities. Also, don’t just chase her blindly. You could be attacking the clone, which is a waste. Remember, she won’t be able to dash again for around 12 seconds, so use this to your advantage.
Dark Ascent (E): With this ability, Phoenix can fly freely, move incredibly fast, and even regenerate her ammo. While soaring, she’s tough to hit, making her great for scouting ahead or making a quick getaway. Just remember, she can’t use her regular attacks when flying. Moreover, once her flight power starts running low, she has to land or she’ll lose her speed. A smart move is to pressure or force her to come down, since this limits what she can do.

How to mitigate Phoenix’s damage in Marvel Rivals?
To dull Phoenix’s power, teams should avoid letting enemies bunch up and block line of sight on her big attacks. Her Spark mechanic pushes clustered targets, so spreading out prevents chain explosions. You can use cover and shields to interrupt her vision or absorb one of her projectiles. Shield-heavy tanks can block her shots and force her out of position. Hard crowd-control and knockbacks are also effective.
A well-timed stun or push can end her reposition if she tries to fly up or teleport. Keep in mind, Phoenix has no traditional invulnerability. Kill her clone quickly and then follow after the dash or wait out her Dark Ascent gauge to punish her when it’s expiring. Always focus fire on Phoenix as a high-priority target when her mobility skills are on cooldown.
Baiting abilities and exploiting cooldowns
A clever team will bait out Phoenix’s cooldowns before committing. For instance, provoke her Telekinesis Burst by briefly grouping up or faking vulnerability. Once she casts it and the stun goes out, suddenly scatter or focus a target away. After the stun window closes, she has a 10-second cooldown on that move.
Similarly, bait her Telepathic Illusion dash. If you force an exchange and she uses her dash defensively, the clone will explode (marking anyone nearby). She is much less mobile once the dash is down and can be caught. After Phoenix uses a big ability (especially her ultimate), she will have expended several resources.
A good tactic is to save your crowd-control or high-damage combos until after she finishes flying or after the landing burst. After, you can punish her while she’s back in human form and possibly reloading.
Map Positioning and Movement
Map awareness is crucial. Avoid starting a fight in wide-open chokepoints without cover since Phoenix excels in open areas and from high ground. Approach cautiously if she takes the high ground, since she can fly down or dash to an elevated perch. It can help to occupy alternate flanks or high ground yourself to challenge her angles.
Her huge ultimate is very effective in enclosed spaces, since enemies have limited space to dodge or scatter. Use the terrain to your advantage by ducking behind walls or pillars to break line of sight when you hear her ultimate or Telekinesis coming. While battling over an objective point, avoid bunching up under an obvious landing spot. Instead, have your team pre-spread or cluster on one side so her explosion doesn’t hit everyone.
Coordination is also important. For example, have one teammate bait her into burning cooldowns, then rush in once she’s facing her cooldowns. Always keep track of her position, if she flies or goes out of sight, assume she’s preparing a flank or slam and reposition.
Phoenix's ultimate, Endsong Inferno, can be avoided or shut down fast. Try to scatter if you see it coming. This ultimate destroys grouped teams, shields, and bonus health.
Phoenix has abilities like Telekinesis Burst (stun/slow), Telepathic Illusion (dash/clone), and Dark Ascent (flight). Her ultimate is Endsong Inferno, a powerful area-of-effect attack.
To reduce Phoenix's effectiveness, avoid grouping up. Use cover and shields to block line of sight and absorb projectiles. Hard crowd-control and knockbacks can interrupt her abilities.
Phoenix's Telepathic Illusion dash has a cooldown of around 12 seconds. Use this to your advantage by pressuring her when she can't dash again.
Phoenix's abilities apply 'Spark' stacks, which amplify damage. Telekinesis Burst and her clone explosion from Telepathic Illusion both apply Spark. Avoid getting hit by these to minimize damage.
