Blizzard has announced plans to bring 6v6 matchmaking back to Overwatch 2 for testing. Since the shift from 6v6 to 5v5, which accompanied the launch of Overwatch 2, players have been divided over the change. Now, Blizzard is set to test two 6v6 modes, arriving in Season 14, to gauge community interest.
Blizzard will introduce two new 6v6 test modes in Season 14. The first mode, "Min One, Max Three", will launch a week into the season. Later, the classic 2-2-2 team structure will also return for testing. Both modes will be available in unranked playlists, allowing experimentation without impacting ranked gameplay.
Let us discuss these experimental modes in detail below and assess their viability for a permanent change in the Overwatch world.
The Shift from 6v6 to 5v5 in Overwatch 2
In Overwatch 1, teams of six featured two tanks, two damage, and two supports. Overwatch 2 changed this to a 5v5 format, reducing team size to one tank, two damage, and two supports. Many fans prefer 6v6, which offered different dynamics and strategies. This ongoing preference led Blizzard to test a 6v6 return.
New 6v6 Test Modes
"Min One, Max Three" Mode
The "Min One, Max Three" test will allow teams more flexibility. Each team must have one player per role, but no role can exceed three players. This setup will encourage unique team compositions, opening up fresh strategies. Players can also switch roles mid-game, as long as they follow the Min One, Max Three limit.
Classic 2-2-2 with Overwatch 2 Adjustments
The second test will reintroduce the traditional 2-2-2 format from Overwatch 1. However, Blizzard plans to incorporate Overwatch 2 mechanics, such as reducedcrowd control and adjusted hero abilities. This test aims to see how current heroes perform in a 6v6 setup, with balance tweaks specific to this format.

Future of Overwatch 2 Team Formats
These 6v6 tests will only be available in dedicated unranked modes, ensuring that main game modes aren’t affected. Blizzard will introduce specific balance changes for these modes, including reduced tank power and survivability. This will allow for controlled testing without disturbing regular gameplay balance.
Blizzard is taking a slow, careful approach to these tests. By offering two distinct 6v6 formats, they hope to assess player interest and identify potential gameplay issues. This cautious strategy reflects Blizzard’s commitment to providing meaningful player options without disrupting Overwatch 2’s core gameplay too abruptly.
This limited return of 6v6 shows Blizzard’s commitment to community feedback. Players interested in the format will have a chance to try it in Season 14. The test results may lead Blizzard to refine or even consider making 6v6 a permanent option, depending on player response.
Blizzard’s experimental modes offer hope for a 6v6 comeback in Overwatch 2. Season 14’s two distinct tests will help the development team assess community interest and gameplay balance. Players have a unique opportunity to experience the format once again, as Blizzard gauges its viability for the game’s future.
