Valorant e-sports has multiple teams full of professionals who could give any player a run for their money. Among the many teams, Sentinels sits as one of, if not the most popular Valorant team that pretty much every Valorant team knows. With the amount of marketing Riot Games has done for the team, that’s no surprise.
However, while an unassuming person would think that Sentinels is the best team, or at least up there, that might not be the truth. On the contrary, many Valorant pros think that Sentinels is actually the most overrated Valorant e-sports team. While this may sound like an insane statement to some, we’re here to unwrap whether this statement has any merit to it.
So, without any more delay, let us see if Sentinels is the most overrated Valorant e-sports team.
When did Sentinels start “falling off?”
Despite coming into the Valorant World Championship with a lot of hype, things didn't go as planned for the Sentinels. In their opening game against GenG, they got handed a pretty tough loss, so much so that it stirred up a storm of debate among pros, fans, and analysts.
The team’s skill and talent are being questioned, and some pro players are commenting that they get way more credit and recognition than they deserve. The buzz around their performance has made them a hot topic for discussion, and it's clear that this match has put a big spotlight on their performance. Some say it was an off day, while others say their skill level doesn’t live up to their reputation.
Analyzing Sentinel's performance so far
Sentinels had a very decent start to their year, as they won both the VCT Americas Kickoff and Masters Madrid. They seemed pretty unstoppable for a moment and even had fans and experts wooing for them. That didn't last too long though, as their victories would be followed up by a lackluster performance in the VCT Americas Stage 1 and missing out on the Masters Shanghai.
Fast forward, their recent performances have only added to the claim of inconsistency. Two losses before the World Championship didn't help inspire any confidence in critics, and the most recent loss against GenG set them back big time. GenG dominated the game with a 2-0 victory, dealing a massive blow to Sentinels’ momentum and morale.
In the first map, GenG completely overwhelmed the Sentinels, with the latter struggling to adapt to GenG’s aggressive plays and sharp execution. The second map saw a similar story, with the sentinels failing to recover from their early blows.

Criticism and Consistency Issues
Pros and analysts have not held back on their criticism. Benjy Fishy and FNS have been particularly vocal about the team being overrated, highlighting their recent struggles. FNS pointed out how the team’s emotional lows could impact their chances at the World Championship. He thinks a lot of the criticism is just about how they’ve been playing recently, rather than specific issues like coaching.
The “overrated” label continues to haunt the Sentinels, with a survey of over 100 VCT pros tagging them as the most overrated team at the World Championship. One thing is very clear, the doubts all seem to stem from their lack of consistency. Specifically, the issue of not being able to utilize their strengths and work on their weaknesses, highlighting a deeper problem of their actual potential which may not be up to the mark according to analysts.
One of the biggest reasons some pros think Sentinels doesn’t deserve all the love it gets is because many fans flock to it not because of the players’ skills but because of the social media influencers that are in it. To be more specific, SenZ TenZ is considered the face of Valorant, even though some think he’s only an above-average player.
TenZ is placed in such an esteemed position in the Valorant community, that even when he comments on whether he likes CS2 or Valorant more, countless journalism websites start covering it. When seeing this from a Valorant professional’s point of view, it might feel like fans like the players for their personalities and not their gaming skills.
Can Sentinels Bounce Back?
Sentinels still have a chance to turn things around. Their upcoming match against FunPlus Pheonix on August 8 is a big one, and they have to win it at all costs. If they can pull off a strong performance, they can advance into the tournament and restore their reputation. It's a make-or-break moment for the whole team, and the result will be a defining factor in how they are perceived by the fans and the pros.
To bounce back, they’ll need to address the performance inconsistencies and come up with a solid strategy for the remaining matches. If they can make improvements in gameplay, confidence, proper execution, and teamwork, then there’s still hope for redemption.
