Continuous improvement is easily one of the most important factors that determines whether an online competitive game can truly become successful, and the same applies to Marvel Rivals [1]. The game not only adds new heroes with unique abilities that players can control, but ensures every character perfectly fits into the game.
Team-ups, for example, are ways for different heroes to get together and use joint abilities. These abilities range from passive buffs to active abilities. Marvel Rivals Season 2 brought three new team-up abilities, which are Sorcery Surge, Captain’s Spirit, and Mind Link. All three abilities have high potential to change the course of the game.
Here’s what every new Marvel Rivals team-up ability does, and some tips to master them against other players.
Sorcery Surge
Doctor Strange + Scarlet Witch
The first new team-up ability is Sorcery Surge. Featuring the two sorcerers in the game, Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch, the ability has Doctor Strange replace Scarlet Witch’s Chthonion Burst, which is usually her C, with Mystic Burst. This upgraded version of the ability is used through the same attack but is slightly better for a number of reasons.
Firstly, the potential for the attack greatly increases, especially considering the base ability is lacking in the damage department. Additionally, players can press and hold the button to continuously launch magic missiles at the targeted area, continuously damaging enemies, and even potentially taking out tanky Vanguard heroes with little difficulty.

Stars Aligned
Captain America + Winter Soldier
Up next is a team-up ability that likely should have been in the game from the start. The Stars Aligned team-up gives Captain America and Winter Soldier an additional prompt when they’re close enough and looking at each other. Either player can interact with the other character to initiate the command for Stars Aligned. The other character must agree to have the initiator charge toward the other player, creating a shockwave at the point of impact to damage enemies.
Another cool bonus the Winter Soldier gets thanks to this team-up is that he can use the C button while looking at a nearby teammate to slam the ground near that enemy with his mechanical arm. This lets Bucky quickly move across the area and deal AoE damage to multiple enemies, especially those who utilize physical attacks.
Mental Projection
Emma Frost + Magneto + Psylocke
The last addition to the team-up list in Marvel Rivals isn’t because the team-up wasn’t in the game from the start, but because of the new addition in the form of Emma Frost. Emma currently only has one team-up, and it makes sense that it’ll be with her fellow mutants, Magneto and Psylocke.
With the team-up ability activated, Emma Frost can go near Psylocke or Magneto and automatically create an illusionary double of the other character. The double moves and performs abilities just like the original, even dealing damage in the process. While the illusion is easily shattered when an enemy damages it, it’s handy to trick and confuse enemies to give the original the chance to escape or deal devastating damage.
Which two team-up abilities were removed in Marvel Rivals?
Season 2 didn’t just add team-up abilities, as the update also removed two fan-favorite team-up abilities. The team-up abilities players can no longer activate in Marvel Rivals are:
Metallic Chaos, in particular, was heralded as one of the best team-up abilities, so it doesn’t make sense for the developer to remove it. It could be that NetEase Games thinks every character should only have a limited number of team-ups with other characters to ensure team compositions are based around them. After all, if Captain America had a team-up with every hero in the game, then his pick rates would shoot through the roof since there would be a high chance that at least one of his team-up abilities will activate.
There’s also the fact that multiple team-up abilities activating can potentially make things very hectic. Take Star Lord, for example. The hero already has a team-up ability that lets him revive himself thanks to Adam Warlock. If he had high damage-dealing abilities too, then he’d be nearly unstoppable and borderline broken.
Sorcery Surge is a Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch team-up. Doctor Strange replaces Scarlet Witch’s Chthonion Burst with a Mystic Burst, an upgraded version that deals continuous damage.
Stars Aligned is a Captain America and Winter Soldier team-up. One player charges toward the other, creating a shockwave. Winter Soldier can also slam his mechanical arm near a teammate to damage enemies.
Mental Projection is an Emma Frost team-up with Magneto or Psylocke. Emma creates an illusionary double of the other character. The double mimics the original's abilities, tricking enemies.
Two team-up abilities were removed in Season 2: Metallic Chaos (Magneto + Scarlet Witch) and Voltaic Union (Thor + Captain America + Storm).
Team-ups aren't necessary, but increase a hero’s potential. For example, Iron Man paired with The Hulk uses Banner’s Gamma Radiation to power up his Unibeam.
