Overwatch 2 has seen a lot of change since the first Overwatch came out in 2016. While the game started with the 6v6 format so many players know and love, that was changed when Overwatch 2 took things to a new 5v5 direction. Fans didn’t like that, leading the 6v6 format to return.
Now, there are rumors that Blizzard may be thinking of taking things a step further with 7v7 game modes. It’s unconfirmed whether this mode or format will ever make it to the final game, but having it would likely turn the entire Overwatch 2 competitive scene inside out.
Here’s what to know about the rumored Overwatch 2 7v7 mode and what it would mean for the game’s future.

Will Overwatch 2 get a 7v7 mode?
Blizzard hasn’t made any official comments about whether Overwatch 2 will get a 7v7 mode. The rumors started circulating when a user on X called spottier_f4k3 shared a screenshot [1] that was supposed to be the listing for a 7v7 experimental feature. The screenshot may allegedly have been data mined, but there wasn’t any additional feature given to players, including whether this will be the norm, if there will be a role queue, or if hero perks will be included too.
Considering Overwatch 2 is in one of its best recent positions, it’s highly unlikely Blizzard will want to change the regular game modes so drastically. Therefore, if a 7v7 mode does come out, it would likely be for a limited-time mode or for an arcade mode.
While the return of 6v6 from the 5v5 format Overwatch 2 was using was met with praise, that doesn’t necessarily mean more is always good. Having fourteen players fighting it out on one map may be a recipe for overcrowding, which would be disastrous for an esports-centered team like Overwatch 2.
Additionally, while the new format would let competitive teams add another player to their rosters, it would switch up the overall role metas. Usually, players like to go for two tanks, two DPS, and two healers, but a 7v7 mode would make way for more experimenting. Some teams will likely go for three tanks to ensure they can overwhelm the enemy with more health, while others would prefer to have an extra DPS character who can make quick work of enemies.
