League of Legends has gone through many changes recently, from the removal of free Hextech Chests to the revamping of the Blue Essence system. Many of these changes have annoyed free-to-play players since they seem to be more aimed toward forcing players to spend money on skins, champions, and other cosmetics.
Riot Games finally made an official statement regarding many of the changes in League of Legends. However, instead of changing some stuff, the studio has instead opted to double down on the free Hextech Chests removal. Now, fans wonder whether League of Legends is slowly but surely moving toward a more pay-to-win future.
Here’s everything to know about the future of free Hextech Chests in League of Legends.
Riot defends the removal of free Hextech Chests
Riot Games removed free Hextech Chests from League of Legends in early 2025, saying it isn’t sustainable. Players have been using these chests as the main way to unlock skins in LoL, which led to a decline in direct skin purchases.
League studio head Andre ‘Meddler’ van Roon states [1]
“Free chests unintentionally became the primary way to unlock skins, and an increasing number of players ended up with substantial skin collections for free,”. Executive producer Paul ‘Pabro’ Bellezza adds, “This is about ensuring the sustainable long-term health of League.”.
The removal of Hextech Chests made numerous players unhappy, with many threatening to boycott the title. Riot defends the decision and emphasizes that LoL's revenue relies on skin purchases since it’s a free-to-play game and skins are the only way for the game to earn money.
Riot Games will improve the Battle Pass
Riot is improving the battle pass rewards to compensate for the erasure of free Hextech Chests. Players who unlock a battle pass skin will obtain the champion and will receive the corresponding champion for free. The company is also removing missions that require skins and simplifying harder challenges.
Belezza admits,
“We’ve heard a fair bit of feedback that those skins don’t feel like they’re good enough in various respects,”. “We agree with a lot of that feedback. We’re going to be looking to add more distinct visual effects and more pronounced model changes.”.

How did Blue Essence change in LoL?
The new reward system has affected how players get Blue Essence, causing frustration among the community. Riot initially provided 4,750 BE in the new battle pass, while new champions cost 7,900 BE in their first week.
Riot later acknowledged the issues, stating, “We screwed up”, and has adjusted the new system to make it more consumer-friendly. Van Roon explains,
“We want to deliver the best experience that you can play forever without spending anything; so that you only spend money when we’ve made something great that you want to spend money on.”
