Will Arcane Season 3 happen? What's Next!

Will Arcane Season 3 happen? What's Next!

Arcane [1] took the world by storm when it came out with its two seasons, giving fans and non-fans of the game a taste of just how expansive and rich the lore of Runeterra is. However, it was confirmed that Arcane Season 2 would wrap up that particular series, and with that, the story of Vi, Jinx, Caitlyn, and the other residents of the twin cities of Zaun and Piltover.

With everything said and done, Arcane’s success ensures the League of Legends animated universe will be seen again. Today, we’re here to dive deep into everything we know about the future of the animated League of Legends universe, including highlighting all the lore advancements we’ve seen so far to ensure fans know what point in time the next animated project will likely take place in.

So, if you’re like us and you want to experience some more animated League of Legends goodness, then keep reading because we’re here to tell you what to expect next.

Where did Arcane Season 2 leave off?

Arcane Season 2 wrapped up with a heavy, emotional finale that brought Vi and Jinx’s story to a close. As war broke out between Piltover and Noxus, alliances shifted, and major players clashed.

Mel and Caitlyn faced Ambessa while Ekko returned with the Z-Drive to help tip the battle in Piltover’s favor. Meanwhile, Jayce and Viktor ended their lives to stop the chaos and shut down the Hextech anomaly for good.

Not all loose ends were tied up even after the dust settled. The show made it seem that Jinx sacrificed herself to save Vi during a fight with Warwick, but hints like a purple flash of light that looks like her shimmer ability suggest she might have escaped.

Mel’s story also took a massive turn, and she became the new Noxian Warlord. With the army now following her lead, Mel’s future in Runeterra’s power struggle was just the beginning.

How is Riot building the Arcane cinematic universe?

Unlike Arcane, which was one consistent show with two seasons, it seems Riot Games is now building up the future of the LoL animated universe through multiple shorts. While these shorts are related more to the actual League of Legends game than the show was, since they announce new seasons and splits, they’re still made by the same studio as Arcane, suggesting there may be more to them than just fan service.

Welcome to Noxus

After Arcane Season 2, Riot followed it up with the Welcome to Noxus cinematic, offering more than just the annual season kickoff. It picks up where Arcane left off, with Mel Medarda stepping away from Piltover and heading into the heart of Noxus.

Noxus' power struggles come to life in the intense fight between Katarina and Elise, showing off the city's harsh values of strength, ambition, and sacrifice, all thanks to Fortiche Productions' amazing animation.

The fight between Katarina and Elise is choreographed beautifully according to each champion’s unique style. Then there is Darius, who faces Trundle in a close combat brawl at the border of Freljord.

Between Mel’s new role and the unrest in Noxus, Riot is setting up high-stakes storytelling across Runeterra. The trailer ends with LeBlanc and Vladimir scheming something sinister, setting the stage for the next cinematic.

A Dark Gambit

A Dark Gambit picks up where Welcome to Noxus left off, diving deeper into the shadowy politics of Noxus. LeBlanc and Vladimir plot quietly but dangerously, and the tension hits hard. LeBlanc’s cryptic line, “a single whisper can cut deeper than a thousand blades,” perfectly sums up how sinister things are getting in Noxus.

We see more of Atakhan, a demonic force active in-game during the Noxus season. He is chained and desperate for freedom, a weapon that Vladimir and LeBlanc are willing to exploit. It raises the stakes and gives Atakhan a much bigger role.

The focus on Ionia hints at what’s next. LeBlanc sees it as a doorway, and while Vladimir hesitates, their plan is already in motion. With Mel’s arc from Arcane now tied to Noxus and Ionia in the crosshairs, Dark Gambit feels like a bridge between the Arcane, the game’s current storyline, and the upcoming shows.

What is the future of League of Legends animation?

With everything Riot is setting up, they are eyeing a much bigger cinematic universe. In fact, the next League of Legends show has already been in production for over a year and a half. Shows set in Noxus, Ionia, and Demacia are confirmed to be coming in the future.

Noxus feels like a natural next step. Arcane introduced us to the Medarda family, with Ambessa and Mel tied to Noxus. Mel’s political plays teased the Black Rose, and we also saw Swain’s demonic raven in the finale, which could bring a darker side to the story. There is much to dig into with Noxus’ brutal, war-driven culture and characters like Darius, LeBlanc, and Katarina.

Ionia brings something entirely new. We did not see much of it in Arcane, but the writers could dive into the aftermath of Noxus invasions through characters like Irelia, Zed, and Shen. Since Ionia is formed by clans and philosophies, themes like identity, rebellion, and balance make sense to explore. Thanks to characters like Akali and Master Yi, there is also room for emotional storytelling.

Then, there is Demacia, which shifts the tone to law, order, and tradition. Here, magic is banned, but heroes like Lux wield it secretly. That sets the perfect stage for a powerful story, especially with Garen, Sylas, and Kayle on different sides of the moral spectrum. A show here could explore what happens when the control shifts and the systems are challenged.

Exploring Riot’s other animated gems

After covering the Arcane-themed cinematics, we can look at something different in Riot’s animation library. These are not tied to the Arcane storyline but are still a great watch.

The Bridge Between - Lunar Revel 2025 cinematic

The Bridge Between was all about celebrating the Year of the Snake, with champions like Cassiopeia, Jarvan IV, and Nami leading the charge. They guide their spirit companions home but encounter Mythmaker Jhin, who is up to something shady.

The animation brings the vibrant and mythical elements of Lunar Revel to life. It also introduces new skins for those champions and gives us a closer look at the cultural richness of the event. It is a more light-hearted addition to the universe for fans to celebrate.

Spirit Blossom Beyond ‘25 S2 cinematic

Here, Tomorrow explores themes of light and shadow, beginnings, and endings, set in the Spirit Blossom universe. The cinematic features champions like Xin Zhao, who navigate the realms and capture deep emotions tied to hope and transformation. The animation also sets up multiple skins of known characters while also giving fans their first look at the new ADC champion.

The animation by THE LINE is gorgeous, with smooth, detailed visuals that capture the essence of the Spirit Blossom. The song Here, Tomorrow by Lilas Ikuta and Kevin Penkin perfectly complements the experience with its haunting melodies and rich orchestral feel.
