Marvel Rivals Season 9.5 Install Size Reduction Explained

Marvel Rivals Season 9.5 Install Size Reduction Explained
Listen to this post

Marvel Rivals Season 9.5 install size reduction is a storage question, not a download-size question: the update repackages texture assets so the final install gets smaller, even though the first Season 9.5 patch will be larger than usual while those files are rebuilt. The expected reductions are approximately 30% on PC, 20% on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and 7% on PlayStation 4.

If you are deciding whether to update now, the useful answer is simple: expect a bigger one-time migration, then a lighter install afterward, without treating the storage saving as proof of faster performance. Here is how the texture-compression overhaul changes the install and what the published figures mean for each platform.

The texture-compression overhaul rebuilds the install

The August 7 patch notes describe an "optimized texture resource compression strategy across all platforms," reducing the hard-drive footprint after installation. This is more than a tiny cleanup: the game is changing how it packs and stores texture assets.

Creative director Guangyun Chen put it more directly in the Season 9.5 Dev Vision: "In season 9.5, we are implementing a massive texture compression overhaul. Without sacrificing a single pixel of visual fidelity, we are drastically shrinking the game's footprint on your hard drives. Note: Because we are completely repackaging these assets, the initial Season 9.5 update will be larger than usual, but the final install size will be much lighter."

So, yes, the update can look chunky in your launcher while still leaving a smaller game behind. The files have to be rebuilt first. That's the tradeoff.

PC gets the biggest saving

The Dev Vision says PC players can expect about 40 GB back, while PlayStation and Xbox players should see around 15 GB. Eurogamer reported the same split on August 5. PC just gets the bigger win.

PlatformExpected savingPatch-notes reduction
PCApproximately 40 GBApproximately 30%
PlayStation 5Around 15 GBApproximately 20%
Xbox Series X|SAround 15 GBApproximately 20%
PlayStation 4No GB estimate givenApproximately 7%

The August 7 patch notes express the reduction as percentages instead of fixed gigabyte totals. That matters. The 40 GB and 15 GB figures are estimates, not promises for every install. NetEase did not publish exact post-update footprints in the recovered notes, so subtracting those numbers from an old install would be fake precision.

The newer platform breakdown also includes PS4 at roughly 7%. That version was not covered by the earlier 15 GB console headline, so PS4 players should use the official percentage rather than borrowing the PS5 and Xbox estimate.

The larger first download is a one-time repackaging cost

A normal patch swaps selected files. Season 9.5 has to repackage the game's assets to apply the new compression strategy across the install. Polygon reported that this makes the initial Season 9.5 update bigger than a typical Marvel Rivals patch, even though the completed installation becomes lighter.

Download size and installed size are different numbers in this case. Season 9.5's initial update will be larger than usual because the assets are being repackaged, while the completed installation is expected to occupy less drive space. The advertised savings refer to that final installed footprint.

NetEase has not supplied an exact patch-download total or peak temporary-space requirement in the sources recovered here. So nobody can honestly give every player one magic free-space threshold. Leave some headroom before you start.

The storage cut does not prove faster performance

No. A smaller footprint does not automatically mean higher frame rates, shorter load screens, fewer stutters, or lower system requirements. The announced change concerns storage, and the available claims address drive footprint and visual fidelity rather than measured performance gains.

The quality claim is narrower. Chen said the overhaul works "without sacrificing a single pixel of visual fidelity," and Polygon relayed the same wording. That is a clear promise that the smaller install should not make textures look worse. It is not proof that every scene has already been compared pixel by pixel on every platform.

Treat Season 9.5 as a disk-space win unless testing shows more. File compression is not an automatic FPS buff.

Leave headroom, update, then check the final install

The bigger patch is temporary. The storage saving is the point: pay the repackaging cost once, then keep the lighter install.

FAQs

The official patch notes estimate roughly 30% less storage on PC, 20% less on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and 7% less on PlayStation 4. The developer separately described this as about 40 GB on PC and around 15 GB on PS5 and Xbox.
Season 9.5 completely repackages the game's texture assets to apply the new compression strategy. That makes the first update larger than usual, but the completed installation occupies less drive space afterward.
