Everything to know about the League of Legends TCG game

Everything to know about the League of Legends TCG game

The name League of Legends [1] is no longer limited to just the initial MOBA by Riot Games that started it all. It now spans multiple pieces of media, including the Netflix animated TV show, multiple spin-off games, a bustling esports scene, and more. It seems the team isn’t done yet, as it’s also planning to delve into the world of TCGs with Riftbound: League of Legends TCG.

Today, we want to go through everything we currently know about Riftbound: League of Legends TCG, formerly known as Project K. This includes what it is, how the overall format and customization will be, and some decks and cards that have already been revealed so you know what type of champion cards to expect.

So, if you want to dive into the TCG scene but Pokemon cards are too expensive, then keep reading because Riftbound could potentially scratch that itch for you.

What is League of Legends Riftbound?

Riot Games is stepping into the trading card game (TCG) world with Riftbound: League of Legends TCG. It was first teased as Project K in December 2024, and Riot has spent time refining the game since then. They have partnered with UVS Games, a veteran in tabletop publishing, for the phased global launch. China is expected to get the game first in the summer of 2025, English-speaking regions following later that year, and other international rollouts in 2026.

A massive change since the Project K reveal is the complete redesign of the card aesthetics. The original card design fell short, featuring simple frames, difficult-to-read text, and an overall style that did not align with the high standards we expect from Riot. Listening to the feedback, Riot overhauled the visuals completely, now featuring vibrant color contrasts, cleaner text, and a more polished layout. This redesign helps Riftbound stand out in the crowded TCG market.

Riftbound format and gameplay

Riftbound: League of Legends TCG is taking a refreshing approach by focusing on multiplayer gameplay from the start. While many trading cards are built around 1v1 play, Riftbound embraces 2v2 and free-for-all formats, making it perfect for playing with friends.

Whether you team up or play alone, the game is designed to let you play without worrying about complex rules or ban lists. The focus is on fun, social interactions, and enjoying the League of Legends universe in a more casual setting.

Riftbound also adds excitement for collectors with its rare secret cards. These will feature special designs and showcase Riot’s stunning art style. Fans can expect their favorite champions in unique designs, and there is the possibility of skin-themed cards appearing down the line. These rare versions will make the game more thrilling for collectors.

Core Riftbound collectible components

Origins booster packs & displays

The Origins set kicks off Riftbound: League of Legends TCG with over 300 unique cards, each featuring stunning original artwork that brings League champions to life. Each 14-card booster pack contains a mix of Commons, Uncommons, Rares, and foil variants, while a full booster display gives you 24 packs. Every opening feels like a win, with an average of six Epics and multiple alternate-art cards per box. The set is a strong start, whether you are playing or collecting.

Riftbound sleeved boosters

If you are a collector, these single-pack boosters come in cool sleeves and feature Jinx, Ahri, or Yasuo. The cards inside are the same as found in regular Origins booster packs, but the improved and stylish packaging adds extra flair to your collection.

Confirmed Riftbound booster sets

If you intend to jump straight into the action, these 56-card decks have you covered:

Each deck has a booster pack for customization, a foldable deck box, a playmat, and a guide to help refine your strategy. These decks will provide a solid base with plenty of room to grow.

Proving Grounds box set

The Proving Grounds box set is the perfect way to dive into Riftbound, especially for beginners. It's best for 2-4 players and comes with prebuilt decks featuring champions like Annie, Master Yi, Lux, and Garen. The set is designed for balanced matchups right out of the box to give newcomers a taste of the TCG genre.

Will the League of Legends TCG be popular?

Arguably one of the most popular questions many League of Legends fans have is whether the TCG will be any popular. After all, only a handful of physical TCG franchises manage to make it big, while others are overshadowed by the insane popularity of Pokemon cards, despite the fact they’re so expensive thanks to scalpers.

Well, to answer this question, it’s crucial to first take a look at the League of Legends name objectively. Despite the fact that it originates from a free-to-play MOBA, multiple champions from League of Legends are known by millions, whether you’re talking about the members of KDA or characters featured in the two seasons of Arcane. Even those who have never played the game likely know about the likes of Ahri and Jinx.

Additionally, League of Legends already has a heavy emphasis on cosmetics. One of the best things the studio did is give every skin an in-lore explanation, even if it’s somewhat flimsy, with every skin being part of a different universe. Thanks to this, Riot Games has no shortage of potential cards to release for players to collect.

Naturally, some cards and decks will do better than others. For example, the two confirmed decks based on Jinx and Viktor are likely to do better since the general public knows about these two characters because of Arcane. On the contrary, while Lee Sin is a popular champion, he isn’t that known outside of the League of Legends bubble.

Therefore, while non-LoL players will likely gravitate toward Riftbound: League of Legends TCG to collect cards they think are attractive or are based on characters they know about, more niche characters may not be too popular.
