League of Legends [1] may be one of the biggest esports games of all time, but much of that popularity is thanks to the dedicated teams that play the game professionally. From T1 to Hanwha Life Esports, it’s as if these teams and its players are what keep the game’s esports scene alive.
However, no event brings in as many eyes as Worlds, which is the most esteemed League of Legends tournament. Qualifying for this tournament isn’t exactly easy, but one team has managed to do it before any other team in history. That team is, of course, Gen.G.
Here’s how Gen.G qualified for Worlds before any other League of Legends team.
How did Gen.G qualify for Worlds so quickly?
Before, the requirements to qualify for Worlds were much stricter, requiring teams to put in more work. However, since 2024, it was decided that winning the MSI tournament would be an easy ticket to reach Worlds. Gen.G did that with ease, but another requirement was that the team would have to qualify for the playoffs of its respective region’s playoffs.
By defeating Hanwha Life Esports with a perfect score of 2-0 on the first day of LCK 2025 Round 3, the team has comfortably qualified for the split’s playoffs, guaranteeing its spot in Worlds. This is the first time a team has qualified for Worlds so quickly, as the last team to hold this record was SKT, a team that qualified for Worlds on July 25.
Gen.G continues to comfortably win against every team that stands in its way. From HLE to T1, the team has remained undefeated since this year's LCK kicked off, and the team shows no signs of slowing down. With it already being established that Gen.G is one of the strongest League of Legends teams, considering it won Road to MSI, EWC 2025, and MSI 2025 in the span of one month, it’s unknown if any team will be able to contest Gen.G this year at Worlds.

When will Worlds 2025 take place?
The 2025 League of Legends World Championship will run from September 25 to November 2, bringing the highest level of competitive play to three major Chinese cities: Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu. The tournament will kick off with the Play-In and Swiss stages in Beijing, move to Shanghai for the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, and conclude with the Grand Final in Chengdu. Seventeen of the world’s top teams will compete for glory, prestige, and a record-setting $5 million prize pool.
This year also introduces a major format change: Fearless Draft. Teams will no longer be able to pick the same champion more than once in a series, forcing deeper champion pools and shaking up traditional drafting strategies. The structure still includes the Play-In phase, a 16-team Swiss Stage, and a single-elimination bracket, but the drafting shift is expected to make each series more dynamic.
