How to Find Your Main Role in Overwatch 2

There's typically only one goal in your usual FPS game such as CoD. Do whatever you want to take the enemy out. It doesn't matter what your role in the team is or what gun you use to get the job done. Well, it's a little different in Overwatch 2.
Overwatch 2, being a hero and objective based game, has a wide array of characters all with their own unique abilities that are suited to different circumstances. There are those heroes that are better suited for healing, those that are better for sponging damage, and those that specialize in dealing damage to the enemy.
So how do you find the role best suited for you? Well, that's what we're here to help you with by going through some tips that will help you find your main role in Overwatch 2.
Know All the Roles
The first thing is, naturally, to know everything there is to know about your options. One common misconception is that you need to do ONLY the thing your role specializes in when that couldn't be further from the truth.
For example, if you're a healer, then it isn't mandatory that you JUST heal without dealing any damage to the enemy. Instead, healers are encouraged to deal damage to the enemy when they can in between healing their own teammates.
Similarly, if you're a tank, that doesn't mean you can't deal some damage to the enemy too. Heroes like D.Va and Junker Queen can deal some heavy damage despite being tank champions.
Specialize With Similar Heroes
As we mentioned before, there are a variety of different heroes players can choose from freely, because of which players usually end up specializing in more than one. Even if you main a specific role, it's recommended that you specialize in multiple heroes of that exact role.
Say, for example, that you want DPS to be your main role. In that case, you might want to specialize in Genji/Junkrat (For when you have some support from your team) or Reaper/Solder 76 (for when you can't rely on the healers so you want to pick heroes that can self heal).
By specializing in multiple heroes that are part of the same role, you'll be able to main that role more efficiently without getting burned out by having to play the same hero over and over again.

Don't Be Afraid to Experiment
If you aren't yet sure of which role you want to main, then before specializing in anything you should experiment around with various different heroes all with different roles to see which one suits you best.
Oftentimes many players immediately assume that they would rather play the same hero forever before they even think of being a support main, but when they play someone like Mercy and witness first hand how satisfying it is to keep their teammates alive, they instantly change their minds.
Notice What Your Group Needs
If you're someone who's hopping on Overwatch 2 with your friends who have been playing for much longer than you, then it might be a good idea to take a look at your squad to see which role is missing.
See, new players are like a blank slate, because of which it might be much easier for you to start maining a specific role than having someone who's already used to playing a specific role drop it in exchange for another.
Ask Yourself How You Want to Play
Perhaps the most important question you should ask yourself before deciding on a role to main is how you want to play the game. Not everyone wants to play the game relying on other players to get the kills for them.
As a matter of fact, the DPS role is by far the most popular role, because of which the queue search times are much longer with that role when compared to the other two roles. However, not everyone thinks the same.
If you're someone who instead wants to be someone your team relies on to stay alive, then tank or healer might be the role for you. Remember that all three roles in the game are equally important, which is why they're options in the first place.
Get Some Professional Help
If you're a beginner then you might not have all the necessary information to make such crucial decisions. Do you know who's bound to have that information? A professional in the game of course.
Because of this, it might be a good idea to have someone who's already adept at this game show you the ropes and give you some pointers on all three roles to help you decide which role you want to main.
If you don't have someone like that, then we recommend hiring a professional player from Eloking, and having them go through everything you need to know about your three options to help you decide better.
Ask Yourself Which Role is The Most Fun
So many players get caught up in wanting to win as many matches as they can that they lose sight of what the game really wants to accomplish. Before locking in a specific role for you to main, ask yourself if you even enjoy playing that role.
If you win more than you lose, but you don't enjoy playing the role you play as, then chances are you'll end up getting burned out sooner or later, which will make the entire process of choosing a main role completely moot.
Because of this, we recommend going for the roles that you believe are the most fun for you. You don't enjoy being a tank and having to sponge up damage while relying on your teammates to get most of the kills? Well, switch to the DPS or healer role so you can be part of the action more. Don't force yourself to play a role just because it helps you win.
