How to fix the LoL black loading screen error

How to fix the LoL black loading screen error

League of Legends has a dedicated team that is constantly working to ensure the millions of players who log in every single day don’t face any issues. Unfortunately, some errors still slip through the cracks, which can cause players to scratch their heads, wondering what the problem is.

One of the most annoying errors is the League of Legends black loading screen error. However, this is usually not related to the actual game, but to other factors. Therefore, popular fixes for the League of Legends black loading screen error include updating your GPU drivers, disabling full-screen administration, manually repairing the files, and turning off overlay apps.

So, if you’ve been struggling with the League of Legends black loading screen error, then hopefully we have the fix for you.

Increase your RAM

Overview of League of Legends champions

League of Legends is a rather tame game to run, especially considering how much goes on in it. Regardless, there are certain requirements you must meet to ensure you can run the game properly and without any issues.

RAM, for example, is a major determining factor for how your game runs. Having less RAM could potentially cause issues like FPS drops and slow loading. Because League of Legends requires you to go from the small client to the game window, the seamless transition and multiple windows could cause issues for players with less RAM, leading to the actual game window facing issues like the infamous black loading screen.

Update to an SSD

Like the RAM, your storage device also determines how well your game runs. Although it makes sense that a lot of players use a typical hard drive, or HDD, to store and run League of Legends, the fact of the matter is that the constant updates and tweaks ensure League of Legends requires more power than average hard drives can provide fast enough.

Therefore, it may be worth trying an SSD to run League of Legends. In addition to faster loading times, this should also hopefully fix the pesky black loading screen error, as the error may originate from your hard drive not being able to load the loading screen’s assets, giving you a blank black screen instead. It isn’t that the game isn’t loading, but that it’s loading too slowly.

Update your GPU drivers

The Ultimate Upgrade for GeForce NOW performance

A common cause of the black screen issue is having outdated or buggy graphics drivers. Since your GPU renders the game, any hiccups between the game client and the graphics driver can cause unpredictable black screen issues.

You can use GeForce Experience for NVIDIA cards or Radeon Software for AMD to install updates directly. If you prefer a more hands-on solution, you can manually head to your GPU manufacturer's website (NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel) and download the latest driver.

Disable display scaling and fullscreen optimizations

Display Scaling makes things look crisper, but it can cause unwanted scaling issues that lead to a black screen. A quick fix is to disable display scaling just for League. Right-click the League of Legends launcher, go to properties, then head to the compatibility tab. Check the box for "disable display scaling on high DPI settings.”

As an extra step, it is also worth disabling fullscreen optimizations. Head to the actual LeagueClient.exe file (usually inside Riot Games > League of Legends), right-click it, go to properties, open the compatibility tab, and check “disable fullscreen optimizations.” Hit apply, and you are good to go.

Run the game as an administrator

The black screen can pop up when League of Legends does not have full access to system resources like certain files, network features, or display settings. The client can malfunction if something in the background is restricting its access.

Running the game as an administrator is a simple fix that gives the game permission to all system resources. Right-click the League launcher, head to properties, open the compatibility tab, and check “run this program as an administrator”. Click apply, and start the game again.

Manually repair the Riot Client

The issue could also be in the Riot Client itself. Some files in the client folder, like data from old updates or broken configs, can cause glitches. Refreshing the Riot Client can make a big difference.

  1. Close League of Legends and delete the Riot Client folder from your system
  2. Head to the official League installer and re-download the game
  3. The installer will detect existing files and run a quick repair instead of wiping everything
  4. Once done, log into League and leave the client running in the background.
  5. Next, go to your League of Legends installation folder, find the config directory, and delete it.
  6. Launch a custom game to create a fresh config setup.

Perform a complete repair of game files

Game settings menu interface with options for sound, notifications, and troubleshooting

This method dives deeper by checking the actual game files for League of Legends. Running a full repair will ensure nothing interferes with your experience.

Start by launching the League of Legends client. Open the settings icon in the top right, and choose Initiate Full Repair. If it finds any missing or damaged files, it’ll automatically fix or replace them.

Turn off overlay apps

Background overlay features from apps like Discord, GeForce Experience, MSI Afterburner, or screen recorders have also been reported to cause black loading screens. These overlays can clash with DirectX or the client’s rendering process.

To be safe, try turning off any overlay features you have running. For example, disable NVIDIA Overlay from the GeForce Experience app or exit MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner if turned on. Once disabled, launch into a match again, and the issue should be gone.

Reinstall the game

Play League of Legends now, download for Windows and Mac

It might be time to reinstall the game if nothing works and you are still staring at the black loading screen.

  1. Uninstall League of Legends through the Windows Settings menu
  2. Head to C:\Riot Games and delete anything left behind
  3. Clear any residual files by typing %localappdata% in your File Explorer and deleting any League of Legends folders.

Once done, restart your computer and head to Riot’s official site [1] to download the game again. To avoid permission issues during setup, open the installer as an administrator.

FAQs

What causes the black loading screen in League of Legends?

The black loading screen in League of Legends usually appears when the game client fails to transition properly from champion select to the match itself. This can be caused by outdated graphics drivers, corrupted game files, background programs interfering with the client, or poor internet connectivity. Sometimes, third-party overlays (like Discord or screen recorders) can also contribute to the problem.

How can I fix the black screen before a match starts?

A common fix for the black loading screen is to restart your client or PC and make sure no unnecessary background apps are running. It also helps if you run League of Legends as an administrator and ensure your GPU drivers are fully updated. If the issue persists, running the game through the Riot Repair Tool or doing a full client repair can often resolve corrupted files that might be causing the problem.
