While there are multiple Pokémon belonging to all sorts of regions, few Pokémon are nearly as iconic as starters. Belonging to different regions and games, these starters are the ones who started it all for players worldwide, and catching them in any Pokémon game is a feat worth marveling at.
Of course, Pokémon Legends: Z-A also features a handful of starters that players can capture. These include Chikorita, Tepig, Totodile, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie.
We’ll highlight how and where you can catch all of these starters in Pokémon [1] Legends: Z-A.
How to get Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile in Pokémon Legends Z-A
Upon arrival in Lumiose City after starting the game, you get to choose one of the three Johto starters, Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile. You can get the other two later by finishing the main storyline and unlocking Wild Zone 20 in the post-game. Once Wild Zone 20 opens, you can explore it and catch all the Johto starters in the wild.
Totodile usually swims around the water spots.
Chikorita hangs out in grassy areas.
Tepig is found in the broken-down and brick-filled parts of the zone.
You can also trade to get starters extra early if you are in a rush. That is only possible once you unlock Link Play after your first mission with Mable. You can get a friend to help you out to get your team fully set up for the main story, especially since you cannot breed Pokémon in this game. And of course, all this applies to the Kanto and Kalos starters as well.
To give your starters a boost later on, you can buy Mega Stones for the ones you did not pick at the Stone Emporium in the post-game. They can be a little pricey, but it beats hunting them randomly.

How to get Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle in Pokémon Legends Z-A
To get the Kanto starter trio, you have to progress a bit into the game. The first one will be available through a side mission called A Call From Mable. To complete it,
Defeat Rintaro in Main Mission 8.
Heal your team at a Pokémon Center.
Mable will then call you on your Rotom Phone to visit the Pokémon Research Lab.
Once that happens, make your way to the lab, and you will find Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle waiting in Mable’s office. Just like the Johto starters, you can only pick one, and you can catch the other two in Wild Zone 20 after finishing the main story.
Bulbasaur will be in the grassy areas near bushes.
Charmander can be found in the dirt or desert areas.
Squirtle hangs out near water areas.
How to get Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie in Pokémon Legends Z-A
The Kalos starters each come from their own little side mission, and you can start working on them after finishing Main Mission 5. They are all simple tasks, so you should do them quickly.
Chespin appears in Side Mission 7, A Feisty Chespin, at Academie Etoile with Axi.
Fennekin shows up in Side Mission 8, Get Well, Fennekin, in the Magenta District with Branche.
Froakie is part of Side Mission 9, A challenge from Froakie, in Jaune Sector 8 with Surv.
Each mission has a quick objective, like beating Chespin a few times, bringing a healing item to Fennekin, or completing timed parkour sections for Froakie. Once done, they will happily join your team. But in case you miss them, you can find all three out in Wild Zones in the post-game.
Froakie shows up in Wild Zone 16 once you finish Main Mission 24.
Chespin is in Wild Zone 17 after Main Mission 24.
Fennekin appears in Wild Zone 18 after Main Mission 30 and reaching Rank B.
You'll encounter Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle during the side mission 'A Call From Mable' after Main Mission 8. The other 2 are in Wild Zone 20 post-game.
You choose one Johto starter at the beginning. The other two (Chikorita, Tepig, Totodile) can be caught in Wild Zone 20 after you complete the main storyline.
Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie's side missions become available after you finish Main Mission 5. You can also find them in Wild Zones in the post-game if you miss them.
No, breeding is not available in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. You'll need to catch them in the wild or trade with other players to obtain multiple starters.
You can purchase Mega Stones for your starters at the Stone Emporium after completing the main game. They can be a bit expensive, though.
