How to get Unstable Molecules in Marvel Rivals

How to get Unstable Molecules in Marvel Rivals

It’s no surprise that Marvel Rivals [1] took off the way it did. After all, the game has so much for players to do, whether it’s playing as their favorite heroes from the Marvel Universe or collecting attractive skins of certain characters. However, to take things further, developer NetEase Games added a feature that lets players customize the color of their favorite skins.

As it is with everything in these hero shooters, you can only change the color of a specific skin by consuming a certain currency called Unstable molecules. Unfortunately, Unstable Molecules are only acquirable through the game’s premium currency, which can make getting them a little tough.

Here’s what to know about Unstable Molecules in Marvel Rivals, including what they’re used for and how you can get more of them.

What are Unstable Molecules in Marvel Rivals?

Unstable Molecules are Marvel Rivals’ newest currency for unlocking alternate color schemes for legendary skins. The name is a direct nod to the material Reed Richards uses to make the hardy Fantastic Four suits in the comics, but these do not affect gameplay or in-game stats. They are cosmetic-exclusive and similar to Upgrade Tokens in Overwatch 2 and Radianite Points in Valorant, used to personalize existing skins into different variants.

If you are confused about how Unstable Molecules fit into the Marvel Rivals currency system, here is a quick breakdown. Lattice is your premium currency purchased with real money that you can convert into other in-game currencies, but not vice versa. Units are for buying cosmetics or the Battle Pass and can be acquired through gameplay, while Chrono Tokens are used to unlock Battle Pass rewards and are obtained via daily missions and tasks.

Each currency has a distinct role, with Unstable Molecules being unique due to their recoloring exclusivity. It makes them niche but still super accessible.

Can you earn Unstable Molecules for free in Marvel Rivals?

The answer is no. The only way to get your hands on Unstable Molecules is by converting Lattice, Marvel Rivals’ premium currency. The exchange rate is straightforward: 1 Lattice equals 1 Unstable Molecule. So, if you are eyeing color customization for your skin, you require 600 Lattice, costing you roughly $6 in real-world money.

NetEase wants to keep Unstable Molecules as a separate tier in the cosmetic system. The intention is to make these color variants slightly more valuable. However, NetEase has confirmed that there will be more ways to earn Unstable Molecules starting with Season 3.

These methods will also likely be targeted toward free-to-play players, as locking a customization like this behind a paywall is against what most freebie players want. Marvel Rivals has cemented an image for itself that the game is freebie-friendly, so it wouldn’t make sense to do something that goes against that.

What is the best way to get more Lattice in Marvel Rivals?

If you want to stock up on Lattice to convert into Unstable Molecules, your go-to route is spending real money. Since Lattice is premium currency, it can't be earned through regular gameplay challenges or seasonal objectives. The in-game store has various Lattice bundles, so you can choose how much you want to invest based on how many skins you need to customize.

There are a couple of ways to get more value for your money. The Season 2 Battle Pass has select rewards that let you trade Chrono Tokens for some Lattice, typically around 100 for 200 Chrono Tokens. While not a massive haul, it is a small bonus if you are already grinding the Battle Pass.

How can you customize skins in Marvel Rivals?

Now that you know what Unstable Molecules are, the next step is using them, which is where the color customization system comes in. Only four skins support this feature currently, including Magik’s Punkchild, Psylocke’s Vengeance, Luna Snow’s Mirae 2099, and Winter Soldier’s Blood Soldier. The feature is still in its early stages, so expect more skins to be supported in the future.

You must own these skins for further customization, as the recoloring cost does not include the actual skin purchase. The changes are not gameplay exclusive and also show up during the hero pick animation, MVP cutscenes, and even emotes, letting you show off your custom look without feeling like a separate skin.

To use Unstable Molecules to buy colored variants, head to the Heroes menu and choose the hero skin you want to customize. Click the Customize button to see an option to convert Lattice into Unstable Molecules. Convert as many as you need, and then buy your colored variant.

FAQs

How can players obtain Unstable Molecules?

Currently, the only way to acquire Unstable Molecules is by converting Lattice, the game's premium currency, at a 1:1 ratio, which means 600 Lattice equals 600 Unstable Molecules. This exchange can be made directly within the game's customization interface. However, the developers have announced plans to introduce additional methods for earning Unstable Molecules, such as through events or the battle pass, starting with Season 3.
