How similar is Valve’s Deadlock to Overwatch 2?

How similar is Valve’s Deadlock to Overwatch 2?

Deadlock is the newest game the iconic video game company Valve has come out with. Tackling the MOBA genre while adding its own twist to make it more akin to a hero shooter, Deadlock has captivated various players who prefer to play other games. Overwatch 2 players in particular wonder how similar the game is to their favorite hero shooter.

Today, we’re here to compare Deadlock with Overwatch 2. This includes what the two have in common as well as how both games are different from one another. Since Deadlock came later, we’ll highlight what the game does to stand on its own feet in order to create a name for itself in the video game world.

So, without any more delay, here’s how similar Valve’s Deadlock is to Overwatch 2.

Is Deadlock Similar to Overwatch 2?

Valve’s newest project, Deadlock, has captivated the attention of players as it blends elements from hero shooters and MOBAs. Deadlock takes inspiration from Dota 2, but it does a good job of being its own thing thanks to some cool features and mechanics. It has a lane-based gameplay, where players can control heroes with unique abilities.

In each match, players go against each other in teams of six, but the addition of shooter mechanics and strategic lane-based objectives creates a new kind of experience for players.

The game comes with a unique steampunk aesthetic, compared to the more traditional and bright Overwatch 2. In Deadlock, heroes have abilities that can be leveled up using ability points. These points can be earned by collecting Souls or completing objectives.

This progression system is similar to the item and skill upgrades in other MOBAs, something that Overwatch 2 doesn't have at all. This adds depth and strategic choices for players, while heroes in OW2 don't really get stronger aside from unlocking their ultimate. Deadlock also incorporates tower defense mechanics, meaning teams must balance their offensive and defensive tactics to come out on top.

Deadlock’s Unique Gameplay Mechanics

Deadlock has several unique mechanics that set it apart from other games in the genre, including Overwatch 2. One of the standouts is the use of “Patrons”, which are powerful golems that players must defend and use to win.

The hero progression system uses Ability Points to upgrade the hero’s abilities. The biggest difference is that these points can be earned via in-game activities instead of having to purchase any specific items. This system encourages players to engage deeply with the game’s objectives and rewards any strategic play, as the choice of upgrades can impact the outcome of a match.

Deadlock’s unique map design combines elements of traditional MOBA lanes with more open, shooter-friendly environments. This unique approach allows the game to be played with different playstyles, from close-quarter encounters to long-range combat. The gameplay is more fluid and dynamic, with more opportunities for ambushes, flanks, and strategic positioning thanks to the addition of shooter elements.

Accessing Deadlock and Community Engagement

Dynamic video game characters engaging in a lively urban battle

Earlier, the unofficial version of Deadlock got leaked by alpha testers, and while these early builds allowed players to explore the game’s mechanics, they couldn't play the multiplayer. Since then, however, Valve has simplified access to Deadlock, and the game is now available through the invite system on Steam. This allows players who already have access to the game to invite their friends to play, and this will significantly expand the player base.

Players need to be invited by someone who has access to the alpha to join the official playtests. As of August, Deadlock has over 18,000 active players, which indicates a clear interest and engagement from the community. Valve’s approach to opening access has been similar to their previous games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2, which is to gradually stress-test the servers and collect player feedback.
