Riot Games has taken a major step in addressing a rising issue within the League of Legends community by banning in-game advertisements from third-party overlays. These tools, which are often used by players for gameplay assistance, have become increasingly invasive over recent months.
What started as harmless stat trackers evolved into apps that placed ads directly into matches, the client, and even loading screens. Let’s take a look at why these overlays are becoming problematic and how Riot is implementing policies to counter it.
The Problem With Overlays
Overlays originally provided helpful information such as champion builds, jungle timers[1], or ally cooldowns. But many began offering competitive advantages that blurred the line between assistance and unfair play. Worse yet, some started displaying advertisements inside the game environment, something many players found disruptive and inappropriate.
In competitive games where clarity and focus are key, these in-game ads became a significant distraction. Riot’s decision to ban them is a clear move to protect the integrity of gameplay and improve the overall player experience.
New Policy Details
As of May 29, 2025, Riot updated its third-party application policy. The key change is that any advertisements placed within Riot properties are no longer allowed. This includes:
In-game overlays
Loading screens
The League client
Overlays can still be monetized through premium versions or external applications, but all in-game ad placements are now off-limits. Riot has also emphasized that all overlay tools must offer a free version and that any monetization must be pre-approved.

Impact on Overlay Apps
This policy significantly affects popular tools like Blitz, Porofessor, and Mobalytics. While these platforms can continue offering helpful features, they must now ensure that no ads appear within the game itself. Ads are permitted only within their standalone applications, not integrated into gameplay or client UI.
Riot also warns that apps violating these rules can be removed or blocked entirely. This ensures that monetization doesn't compromise fairness or interfere with the League of Legends experience.
Game Integrity Comes First
The ban is part of Riot’s broader effort to preserve competitive integrity. Overlay tools must not simulate decision-making, track players who opt to remain anonymous, or offer mechanics that provide direct in-game advantages. Riot’s policy emphasizes that no tool should take away a player’s agency or change the core goal of the game, which is to destroy the enemy Nexus.
Riot’s recent crackdown may only be the beginning. Developers have hinted that further restrictions on features like summoner spell[2] tracking or jungle pathing tools may follow. However, this also opens the door for Riot to consider integrating more accessible and fair tracking tools directly into the game.
For now, the message is clear. Riot is cleaning house. In-game overlays must either play by the rules or stay out of the Rift.
