Valorant: Riot Takes Action Against Smurfing and Player Behaviours

Valorant: Riot Takes Action Against Smurfing and Player Behaviours

Riot Games is finally taking decisive steps to tackle one of the most contentious issues in Valorant's competitive ecosystem, smurfing and disruptive player behavior. In a recent update, the developers outlined a multi-layered strategy aimed at creating a fairer and more transparent experience for all players.

Smurfing isn’t a one-size-fits-all issue. Riot acknowledges that there’s a difference between players performing exceptionally well in their own rank, and those deliberately deranking or playing on alternate low-level accounts to dominate matches unfairly.

The latter is where the real problem lies, and that’s where Riot is now aiming its efforts.

Multi-Factor Authentication Incoming

One of Riot’s first lines of defense will be the introduction of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)[1]. Initially, this will target suspicious cases, but the goal is to eventually require MFA for all competitive accounts. Whether it’s through SMS or an authenticator app[2], this added layer of verification aims to ensure account ownership and discourage players from sharing or purchasing accounts to manipulate matchmaking.

New Report Category

To improve data collection and response time, Riot is also adding a new reporting category: Matchmaking Abuse. Players often report smurfing under the “cheating” label, which muddles anti-cheat efforts. This dedicated category will help Riot identify and act on disruptive behaviors with more accuracy, while also clarifying the intent behind the reports.

New Behaviour Standing Menu

In addition to technical solutions, Riot is increasing transparency around player behavior standing. Players will soon be able to see any active warnings or penalties on their account, as well as what future consequences they might face. This is a way for players to take ownership of their in-game behavior and make changes before harsher punishments are triggered.

“Sometimes you overheat”, Riot said in a community post, “and we get that. But now you’ll know when you’re about to cross the line.”

Tackling Botted and Shared Accounts

While focusing on smurfing and toxicity, Riot also reminded players of their ongoing battle against botted accounts. So far, hundreds of thousands of accounts have been banned. The message is clear: whether it’s automation or account sharing, violating the spirit of competitive integrity will not be tolerated.

Just the Beginning

Riot emphasized that this is only the beginning. The studio is calling for community feedback as these features begin rolling out throughout the year. The approach is iterative, designed to evolve based on what works, what doesn’t, and how the player base responds.

For a game that thrives on competition, Valorant’s health depends on fair matchmaking and mutual respect. With these changes, Riot is signaling that they’re committed to restoring balance and ensuring that the competitive climb feels earned, not exploited.
