Pokemon games have always had large open world areas that players can roam and explore. While the thrill of exploration is a key part of these games, the constant backtracking ensures that players don’t want to constantly run or cycle back and forth to places they’ve already discovered before.
Fortunately, Pokemon games also have the fast travel system in most cases. While some games utilize this by using the Fly HM, the same doesn’t apply to Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Here, players can use the map to fast travel and then unlock warp points to fast travel there whenever they want.
Here’s how you can fast travel in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, and how it differs from traditional Pokémon games.
What is fast travel in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Fast travel is an essential feature that allows your trainer to instantly teleport across the massive, multi-layered urban environment of Lumiose City. Because Pokémon Legends: Z-A takes place entirely within a massive city, travelling from one side of the city to the other on foot can take quite a while.
The fast travel cuts out that commute, allowing you to instantly jump between major landmarks, shops, Wild Zones, and story locations you have already visited and unlocked. This makes managing your time for research, shopping, team healing, and battling much more efficient. You’ll spend less time running and more time catching Pokémon and advancing the story.
How does fast travel work in Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
The core of instant travel in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is tied to your in-game map. To begin fast travel, simply open your map by pressing the “+“ button on your controller.
Once the map is open, you’ll see a full layout of Lumiose City, marked with numerous points of interest. Any location you have successfully unlocked as a fast travel point will be clearly marked with a distinct blue feather or wing-shaped symbol. You have two quick ways to select your destination. The most direct way is to move your cursor over the map and select the icon you want to travel to instantly.
The second method is often faster if you know where you’re going. Press the Y button while viewing the map to quickly pull up a list of all the travel locations you have registered so far. Scroll through the names, confirm your choice, and your Trainer will be instantly transported to that spot.
The battle spot exception
One important exception to the standard fast travel rule is Battle Spots. These are the areas where the Z-A Royale competitions occur during the nighttime cycle. Since these Battle Spots often move or rotate locations within different districts of Lumiose City each night, you don’t need to register them beforehand.
Once a Battle Spot is active on the map, you can directly fast travel to it. This handy feature allows you to jump straight into the nightly action without worrying about having made an initial visit to that specific, temporary area.

How to unlock fast travel spots in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
There are a handful of ways to unlock new travel spots, including activating the fast travel system for the first time and then unlocking new travel points after the fact.
Activating the fast travel system for the first time
The instant travel feature isn’t available immediately when you start your adventure in Lumiose City. You’ll first need to make some progress in the main story. Specifically, you must complete a major early milestone, earning your Challenger’s Ticket after finishing one of the first Battle Zones. Once this mission is complete, you will meet a character, often located at the Pokémon Center, who will officially unlock the fast travel system for your use. This initial unlock enables the core map functionality.
Unlocking new travel points
After the fast travel system is unlocked, the power to add new destinations is in your hands, earned through exploration. To register a new location, you must physically visit and activate that area. For many spots, this means simply walking into the general vicinity. However, for key buildings, like shops or Pokémon Centers, you’ll often need to physically enter the location for it to be officially added to your list of available fast travel destinations. The game records your visit as soon as you enter, permanently adding that building as a teleport point.
FAQs
How to use the Lumi cab in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
For those times when you need to reach a location you haven’t yet unlocked as a fast travel point, the Lumiose City Taxi Cab service, known as Lumi Cab, provides a secondary travel option. It’s also useful if you simply don’t want to run across a large district.
By speaking to a Lumi Cab driver parked around the city, you can pay a small Pokédollar fee to be taken directly to any major location, even one you haven’t visited. This is an excellent solution for saving time when Pokédollars aren’t a concern, especially if you need to quickly get to the opposite side of the city to register a new Pokémon Center or shop.
Which fast travel spots to unlock first in Pokémon Legends: Z-A
A good tip for any Trainer is to start unlocking as many fast travel spots as early as possible. Keep an eye out for key locations you can register as warp points. These include:
Pokémon Centers: These are arguably the most vital spots to unlock, as they let you heal your team instantly from anywhere. Since Centers are usually centrally located within their respective city districts, unlocking all of them gives you fantastic map coverage.
Wild Zones: These are the converted areas where wild Pokémon roam freely. Having a Wild Zone registered lets you quickly jump back to your favorite hunting grounds or complete research objectives.
Shops, Cafes, and Boutiques: Any establishment where you can buy items, change your clothing, or customize your character can generally be registered. These areas can provide quick access to services from anywhere in the city.
Unique story landmarks: Specific buildings or areas tied to the main plot will also become available as fast travel spots as you progress. This ensures you can return to mission hubs instantly.
