Loot boxes in Overwatch have always been a bit of a taboo topic. While they were seen as predatory when they could be earned through regular means, Blizzard’s removal of the items caused so much outrage that a lot of players ended up leaving. Now, it seems things are set to change again.
A new update [1] revealed that Overwatch 2 is bringing loot boxes to the game again. While the first Overwatch had loot boxes players could earn by playing the game and getting lucky, this time things are slated to be more transparent. It’s unknown how much of this is because of Marvel Rivals taking off.
So, without further ado, here’s how Overwatch 2 is bringing back loot boxes.
Loot boxes are returning in Overwatch 2
When Overwatch 2 launched, Blizzard removed loot boxes and introduced a battle pass system to replace them. This change was necessary because the game went free-to-play, and Blizzard needed monetization that relied on seasonal battle passes instead of randomized rewards.
After numerous players complained about the battle pass system and how difficult it is to obtain skins, Blizzard has announced that loot boxes are returning in Season 15, which starts February 18, 2025.
How will loot boxes work in Overwatch 2?
Loot boxes won’t replace the battle pass, but they will be integrated into it. They will be included in the free track of the battle pass, so players don’t have to purchase the premium version to obtain them. There will be two types of loot boxes, with one of them guaranteeing a Legendary item. The free battle pass will have a single legendary loot box, with the premium version having two more.
Also, players can get loot boxes through weekly challenges, with one example showing a reward of five loot boxes at once by completing a specific task. However, Blizzard hasn’t confirmed whether fans can purchase loot boxes directly as they could before.

Blizzard promises transparency with new loot boxes
One huge change with the return of loot boxes is how Blizzard is transparent regarding their contents. Previously, players didn’t know their chances of obtaining rare skins, but now the company has shared the chances of what type of item a person will get, depending on the loot box.

To ensure players receive great items, Blizzard guarantees that a rare or better item will drop in every box, with an Epic item within five consecutive boxes and a Legendary item within twenty boxes.
