Path of Exile 2 switching to a four-month update cycle

Path of Exile 2 switching to a four-month update cycle

Path of Exile 2 [1] may still be considered one of the best ARPG launches in recent years, but the game has gone through multiple development issues. With the sequel’s updates clashing with its prequel, developer Grinding Gear Games has consistently been unable to deliver on updates when promised.

Now, things seem to be changing, as Grinding Gear Games is reportedly pursuing a four-month update cycle. Instead of locking in confirmed features for every updates, the team will aim to deliver one update every four months that will have the features the team has wrapped up instead of pursuing unrealistic expectations.

Without further ado, here’s what to know about Path of Exile 2 switching to a four-month update cycle.

Path of Exile 2 changing its update strategy

PoE 2 director Jonathan Rogers conducted an interview with YouTuber Talkative Tri, talking about the complexity and technicalities of locking in a release date for an update. According to him, Grinding Gear games continued to lock features with PoE 2, even though the studio’s philosophy with the prequel was to lock dates, instead.

Going forward, GGG will revert to locking dates for Path of Exile 2. What this means is that the team is moving to consistent four-month update cycles, with the goal of having content ready within that timeframe. The primary complaint players have had with PoE 2 is that the studio promises an update, but then players have this uncertainty about when the update will even drop. Players saw this happen with the Dawn of the Hunt update, and it severely hurt the game’s reputation and reviews on Steam.

This shift in the development model could mean that a planned feature won’t be ready by the release date. However, according to Rogers, this trade-off is worth it in the long run, since the studio will prioritize polishing existing content rather than rushing unfinished elements. This will ensure that the game doesn’t have half-baked features that should have had more time in development dedicated to it.

It’s unknown when the four-month cycle will kick off, but players should get an idea soon. When the first update comes out, players can likely mark their calendars and count down to when the four month timeframe will be up, since the next update will likely come out before it ends.
