League of Legends [1] gives players multiple ways to express themselves. While skins are the most popular, they aren’t the only ones. Riot Games lets players acquire multiple cosmetic items, from ward skins to emotes. However, the cosmetic items we want to focus on today are icons.
Used to display every player’s individual profile, icons are a key component in personalizing any profile. However, while there are multiple icons players can acquire, weather by purchasing them or by getting them from a capsule or the game’s battle pass, not all of the are equally rare. Today, we want to highlight 15 of the rarest icons in League of Legends and explain what makes them so hard to find.
Without further ado, here are the 15 rarest League of Legends icons that you may never have seen in your LoL journey.
Grand Master Beta Tester Icon
The Grand Master Beta Tester Icon is the rarest summoner icon in League of Legends. Only 100 players per region had the privilege of earning it during the game’s beta testing phase in 2009. The icon's design reflects this privilege that immediately sets it apart from other rewards. Owning this icon is like holding a relic from LoL’s earliest days.

Master Beta Tester Icon
While slightly less rare, the Master Beta Tester Icon was given to the top 500 players per region during the LoL beta in 2009. Thousands of players participated in the testing, but only those with exceptional skill and dedication earned this prestigious icon. The design reflects mastery and refinery of the game when League was in its rawest form.
Challenger Icons
The Challenger Icons are the highest honors a ranked player can achieve. These were awarded only to the top 0.02% of players each ranked season and are a badge of prestige, skill, consistency, and dedication. Obtaining one required players to maintain their Challenger rank until the season’s end while avoiding behavioral penalties.
Vengeful Wrath Icon
The Vengeful Wrath Icon is linked to the Harrowing events of 2012 and 2013, which celebrated Halloween with eerie-themed content. Earning this icon required commitment, as players had to spend 10,000 or more Riot Points to obtain it. Few players invested due to the price, making this icon exceptionally rare and exclusive.
The Dominion Icon
The Dominion Icon is a rare piece from when Dominion game mode was still a part of the game. Players who achieved 100 wins in this mode were awarded this icon. Dominion mode was removed in 2016 due to severe balancing issues and a lack of updates, and the icon was never reproduced, cementing its rarity in the League of Legends world.
The Perfect Ascension Icon
The Perfect Ascension Icon is crowned to players who pull off a difficult feat in the Ascension game mode. Players battle for control of the powerful Ascension buff by eliminating the neutral boss, while ensuring the enemy team doesn't claim the buff even once. Only a few have achieved this, as it requires unreal skill, strategy, and teamwork.
Vintage Icon
While not visually striking, the Vintage icon is a collector’s treasure for long-time players. It was initially granted to those who purchased limited edition skins during early in-game events, and can still be acquired through specific legacy skins when they are in the store. This dual nature gives it a unique value as it continues to be a sought-after item.
Season Two Championship Icon
This exclusive icon, awarded during the 2012 World Championship Finals, is a rare relic from one of the game’s most exciting moments. To obtain it, viewers had to actively engage with the live stream and wait for a special code to appear during the broadcast. Only those tuned in for this landmark event could claim it, adding to its exclusivity and nostalgia.
Challenger 3 Solo 2014 Icon
The Challenger Season 3 Icon marks the early days of the game’s most elite competitive tier. It was given to players who reached Challenger Tier 3 (you can buy lol boost to get to Challenger yourself) and is associated with some of the earliest professional players, many of whom wear it as a badge of honor. The icon represents an era when reaching the highest ranks was even more unforgiving.
Radiant Wukong Icon
The Radiant Wukong Icon is tied to purchasing a Radiant Wukong figure from the Riot store. The rarity is partly a result of Wukong's low pick rate, making the icon more exclusive. Unlike most rare icons, this one requires a physical purchase. The icon symbolizes the dedicated Wukong players and collectors.
Hextech Hard Candy Icon
The Hextech Hard Candy Icon is from the limited-time Sugar Rush event. Players who gifted others during the week were awarded this icon, but its availability was short-lived—it was only available for a week. The icon has not been reissued since, making it extremely uncommon. With the event long over, the Hextech Hard Candy Icon remains a rare sight.
Great Mentor Icon
The Great Mentor Icon was awarded before the 2018 overhaul of the honor system. It rewarded the top 10% of players who consistently displayed helpfulness, teamwork, and positive leadership within the community. The icon became rare due to the difficulty of maintaining such behavior. Though no longer part of the honor system, it's still a testament to players' efforts to promote a positive experience.
Rengar Plush in the Jungle Icon
The Rengar Plush in the Jungle is a unique icon in Riot's merch store. It was part of the Welcome to the Jungle event and was given free with purchases made from the store during the event. The plush was a limited-time offer in 2017 and is now unavailable, making this icon one of the rarest.
Season 1 Ranked Bronze Chalice Icon
The Ranked Bronze Chalice Icon was an award for players who finished Season 1 in Bronze rank. Back then, League of Legends had a much smaller player base, so only a few people obtained it. Season 1 ranked rewards were minimal, and most players who played back then did not stay, making this a historical relic.
Santa Baron Icon
The Santa Baron Icon in LoL was distributed during the Christmas events of Seasons 1 and 2. It was rewarded to players who participated and maintained good behavior throughout the event. Due to the requirement, the icon was distributed to only a few players, making it relatively rare
The Grand Master Beta Tester Icon is the rarest. Only 100 players per region earned it during LoL’s 2009 beta testing phase, making it a true relic from the game's earliest days.
The Vengeful Wrath Icon was earned during the Harrowing events of 2012/2013. Players had to spend 10,000 or more Riot Points, making it rare due to the high cost.
Challenger icons are awarded to the top 0.02% of ranked players at the end of each season. Maintaining Challenger rank and avoiding penalties are required to obtain one.
The Dominion Icon was awarded to players who achieved 100 wins in the Dominion game mode. The mode was removed in 2016, making the icon unobtainable and very rare.
The Perfect Ascension Icon is earned by preventing the enemy team from ever claiming the Ascension buff in the Ascension game mode. It requires skill, strategy, and teamwork.
