Playing a role that prioritizes support over dealing damage to the enemy is tough, especially when the game is a free to play FPS game like Overwatch 2 and the support role in question is the role of a tank. Fortunately, there are a couple of tips we have that will definitely help you win more games and ensure you're able to climb the ranks competitively.
There are a couple of things you need to do to start winning more matches as a tank. For starters, determine what sort of a tank you want to be and then ensure you're playing as the right hero that suits your playstyle. When in a match, try to communicate with your teammates more, and make it a habit to play the objective.
We'll be going through a couple of tips that are bound to help you climb the Overwatch 2 leaderboards as a tank main.
Decide What Sort of Tank You Want to Be
The first thing you need to do to start your journey of improving as a tank main is to determine what sort of tank you want to be instead of flip flopping around. After all, there are different types of tanks that specialize in different things in a match, and there are heroes that support every play style.
For example, there are those players who want to JUST defend their teammates by soaking up as much damage as they can, either by using their insane health, shield, or barriers that can be deployed. If this sounds like your type of thing, then you might enjoy playing a tank like Winston or Orissa.
On the other hand, there are those players who would rather deal as much as they can while they also do their job as a tank. These roles are usually supported by heroes that are able to deal some insane damage by using a specific ability, which is usually their ultimate. For this sort of playstyle, you don't have to look any further than D.Va, who also happens to be the most popular tank hero in the game.
Start Communicating More
The thing about being a support main in a game like Overwatch 2 is that it's really important for you to communicate with your team, especially when it comes to higher ranks. This is because you, as a tank, are able to bring so much more to the table when you have good players to communicate with.
If you aren't able to or aren't comfortable with using game chat then, well, you don't have to. You can simply use the in game pings to notify your teammates about anything you deem to be important.
With that being said, we definitely recommend you try to form a good and permanent competitive group of players you can play with. Not only with this allow all of you to more easily communicate with each other more, but the general teamwork of a squad that has been playing together for a while is naturally much better than an impromptu on the spot group of strangers.
If you aren't able to find a group of players like this, then we recommend playing with a booster from Eloking, as one extremely good player who'll communicate with you is worth more than a group of four random players who may or may not be any good at the game.

Try To Play Objective More
Remember, Overwatch 2 isn't a game of Call of Duty's team deathmatch where the team with the most kills or eliminations wins. Instead, it's a game where every match, or at least every competitive match, is objective based.
Because of this, it's always recommended to play closer to the objective. This applies even more so for tanks, as tanks are arguably the most important parts of a teamfight, and a team fight between one tank hero and one DPS hero vs two DPS heroes will almost always result in the team with the tank winning.
Of course, this doesn't mean you should never leave the objective at all, but try to be close to the objective at all times, especially when you're in the defending team in a match that has an attack and defending team.
Increase Your Rank a Little
This might sound a little weird seeing as how these are tips on how to climb rank as a tank and we're saying to do that you have to be at a higher rank, but hear us out.
The thing about tank players is that they're able to perform much better when it comes to higher ranks. This is because, at really low ranks, most players only want to play as a DPS hero, which leads to an imbalance of roles. Even healers focus more on dealing damage to enemies than healing their own teammates. Of course, the free to play aspect of the game also plays a huge part in this.
However, this doesn't happen at all in higher ranks, as the players then are much more experienced and more likely to play to win rather than play to get kills. Unfortunately, ranking up like this is easier said than done, though the best and quickest way is definitely to hire an Eloking professional booster to get you to the rank you should be at.
