What is the leaked League of Legends WASD control scheme?

What is the leaked League of Legends WASD control scheme?

Unlike most other games that came out years ago, League of Legends [1] has largely retained the same overall gameplay as when it first came out. The goal, team composition, and controls have remained unchanged throughout all these years, though that's slated to change soon.

According to leaks, League of Legends may be getting a new control mode that utilizes the same traditional WASD control scheme most other games do. The looming question is how the introduction of this control scheme will affect League of Legends and its future.

Without further ado, here's what to expect from the upcoming WASD control scheme in League of Legends.

How does movement currently work in League of Legends?

Before we get into the WASD movement leak, let’s look at how movement currently works in League of Legends and what makes it different from other games. The game relies on right-clicking instead of using keyboard keys to steer your champion around. You click to move, attack, and use keys like A for attack or S to stop your actions.

This input style is simple on the surface, but it shapes the entire flow of the game. Instead of feeling like you are in your champion’s shoes, you are guiding them from above like a commander. That is no accident, as games like League and Dota are built around strategy, map awareness, and predicting your opponent’s next move, not mechanical steering.

The design supports mechanics like orb-walking and kiting, where champions like ADCs constantly reposition to stay safe while dealing damage. This is why introducing the WASD movement can fundamentally shift how the game is played.

Is Riot testing WASD controls for League of Legends?

A recent leak from SkinSpotlights on X [2] reveals Riot is adding WASD keyboard movement to the game, even though the classic movement system has been unchanged since 2009. This could give players an alternative to clicking around with the mouse. The leak shows that things are still in an early phase, with Riot testing different settings.

The details from the leak show some interesting movement options, like multiple settings for Flash, like ‘Cursor,’ ‘WASD with Cursor Enhanced,’ and ‘WASD with Cursor Fallback.’ There is also a feature that lets you smart cast spells in the direction your champion is facing, which could add a new layer to ability use during movement. Even if you switch to WASD, the mouse would still be used in some capacity for movement.

Riot has previously added WASD controls to League in 2024 with the limited-time Swarm mode. However, it was not a big deal back then, as the mode itself was too different from Summoner’s Rift. Now, WASD is coming to the main game, and despite the lack of an official announcement, it has still got fans curious about the game’s future.

What would WASD movement look like in League of Legends?

Based on the data-mined information, the WASD system in League of Legends will be a completely modern style of controls separate from the current setup. Players can move with their keyboard while using their mouse for other things.

New settings like directional smart casting and left-click auto-attacks suggest that Riot is rethinking how abilities function with the new WASD movement system. Flash settings, like WASD with Cursor Enhanced and Fallback, will likely change directional abilities to depend entirely on your mouse.

For players of MMOs, shooters, or RPGs, where WASD is standard, this opens up the door to a very different mechanical feel. In terms of champions, ADCs, assassins, or slippery midlaners will have the advantage thanks to the keyboard, making it easier to kite, dodge, or weave between skill shots.

It also raises several important questions: how will aiming work when movement and casting come from different inputs? Or how will the game’s pacing change when you are not relying on the mouse to steer? It is also interesting to think about how hotkeys, camera movement, and spell targeting will adapt to this.

Could League of Legends be evolving beyond click-to-move?

The WASD movement might be our first proper glimpse at League’s core gameplay evolving. The game has been rooted in the classic RTS-inspired controls for almost 16 years, but WASD could mark the start of Riot shifting League to be more accessible and familiar to players coming from other genres.

That could mean new champions designed with WASD in mind or current ones being heavily reworked to suit the new control system. We could also see more game modes that focus on the action-style gameplay, like Swarm last year.

Things could stay the same if this is intended purely for casuals and newcomers. However, the meta could shift heavily if WASD controls become the new norm in pro play. Moreover, if the learning curve flattens for mechanically demanding roles like ADC or jungle pathing becomes easier with real-time control, the ranked ladder could shake from top to bottom.

Whether this is just an experiment for a new game mode or the future standard, it is clear Riot is testing something much bigger than a control tweak.

FAQs

Are there recommended control settings for new LoL players?

New players often benefit from using Normal Cast for better control and awareness. It's also helpful to keep default movement and attack commands until you're familiar with the game. Over time, adjusting settings like camera lock, smart pings, and quick casting on specific abilities can improve your efficiency. Watching how more experienced players set up their controls can also help you find what works best.

What is the difference between Quick Cast and Normal Cast in LoL?

Quick Cast automatically casts an ability at your cursor’s position as soon as you press the key, which is generally faster and preferred by more experienced players. Normal Cast, on the other hand, shows the ability’s range and direction first and requires a second click to confirm. Both options can be toggled per ability, and many players use a mix depending on what feels best for each spell.
