Faker’s Rise in League of Legends

Born on May 7, 1996, in Seoul, South Korea, Faker was raised by his father and grandmother who noticed his love for challenges. He wasn't a typical kid by any means, as instead of playing outside, he’d pour hours on puzzles and even teach himself foreign languages for fun. This set him apart from others as he was someone who thrived on giving himself challenges. As he got older, video games became his escape and passion. He started with Tekken and King of Fighters and eventually moved to titles like Maplestory and Warcraft III.

In 2011, League of Legends arrived in Korea, and Faker was immediately drawn into it. The complexity of the game and the competitive edge offered to those who had a sharp mind immediately grabbed his attention. He didn't always have his eyes on a gaming career, but through time he made a name for himself as one of the best League players in the region. By late 2012, he was recognized for his dominant gameplay with champions like LeBlanc and Syndra. Eventually, he started playing ranked matches where he found instant success, and within months, became the #1 ranked player on Korean servers.

In 2013, Faker was recruited by SK Telecom T1 (later known as T1). he made waves in his first competitive match by singlehandedly taking out Kang “Ambition” Chan-yong, who was one of the top mid-laners at the time. His early games showcased an aggressive playstyle that caught the viewers' attention. His duel against KT Rolster Bullets’ Yoo “Ryu” Sang-wook remains one of the most iconic plays in League history. SKT T1 went on to win the World Championship that year, making Faker the “Unkillable Demon King” we know today.

How Much is Faker Worth?

While Faker’s exact worth remains private due to non-disclosure agreements, we can take a good guess of his net worth and yearly salary. Rumors place his yearly salary at an impressive $5.6 million, making him one of the highest-paid esports athletes in the world, but that's just the beginning. Faker’s income has several sources ranging from sponsorships, Twitch revenue, and prize winnings.

Beyond his salary, Faker’s marketability attracts a lot of sponsorship deals with some big brands. Companies like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Red Bull, Samsung, and Nike saw him as a great representative thanks to his popularity and impact of League of Legends in South Korea. All in all, his estimated net worth sits between $30-50 million as of 2024, putting him on par with some of the highest-earning professional athletes.

Faker’s Age and Career

Faker is currently 28 years old, but he started his career way early on in his life. At the age of 17, he was scouted and recruited by SK Telecom T1 and immediately started making an impact. Landing that iconic solo kill in his first match was just the start, though. In 2013, he led SKT to victory in the OGN Champions Korea. In the 2013 world championship, he helped defeat China’s Royal Club in a one-sided final. From 2014 to 2017, Faker and SKT dominated League and captured two more World Championships in 2015 and 2016.

In 2018 and 2019, SKT faced some setbacks and made a few changes in the roster but Faker remained a constant presence. He adapted his gameplay and helped groom some newer players. He had a dip in performance but he was determined to reclaim SKT’s former glory, and in 2020 it all turned around for Faker. SK Telecom T1 rebranded to T1, and Faker renewed his contract and took on the role of co-owner alongside being a player. On March 5, 2020, he reached 2000 kills in the LCK.

Faker continued to participate in major tournaments like the Mid-Season Invitational and the World Championship. In 2023 he led T1 to the LCK Summer Finals and back to the World Championships which proved his skills hadn't gotten blunt. Faker’s journey from a young gamer to a global icon is an inspirational one for any new player who aims to leave their mark on the competitive scene.

Also on his slate is an IEM Katowice championship in 2016, a Rift Rivals win in 2019, and a gold medal at the 2022 Asian Games.
