Marvel Rivals took off more than most players likely expected. What started as an Overwatch 2-like game with Marvel characters quickly became the most popular hero shooter in recent times, frequently breaking streaming records through Twitch drops and new updates.
However, with so many characters in the Marvel universe, it’s only natural that some fan favorites won’t make it into the game. Since the game came out, data miners have discovered multiple unreleased characters, making some think they may either be there to troll data miners or not planned to be released.
Well, NetEase games made an official statement on this matter and the answer is arguably the best-case scenario.
Marvel Rivals data miners and alleged leaks
With Marvel Rivals consistently getting new content, like the Fantastic 4 joining the roster, there has been speculation regarding future heroes due to data miners finding potential additions in the game’s code. Some fans have questioned whether these leaks are legitimate or if NetEase Games is planting false information to discourage data mining.
In a recent IGN interview [1], Marvel Rivals producer Weicong Wu addressed the topic and offered insight into how the development team approaches these discoveries.
The Marvel Rivals rumor mill is constantly churning with frequent character leaks and game mode speculation. Some players suspect that NetEase Games might be misleading data miners by inserting fake hero names into the game’s code. However, the development team has remained mostly silent on the issue.
Marvel Rivals producer responds to unreleased character leaks
When Weicong Wu was asked about the legitimacy of the leaks and if they were trolling fans, he clarified that NetEase Games is not trolling data miners and stated “No. We would rather spend our time developing the actual game”. Although he didn’t confirm what characters will launch in future patches, he emphasized that the team is focused on bringing meaningful content to the game.
Wu reiterated that Marvel Rivals will keep receiving updates, including new heroes every month and a half, with The Thing and The Human Torch joining the roster on February 2.

Is Marvel Rivals getting a PvE mode?
Alongside future characters, there have been rumors of a PvE mode through data mining, but Wu states that NetEase Games currently has no concrete plans for such a mode. However, the team is experimenting with new gameplay experiences and could introduce limited-time events instead of a full-fledged PvE mode.
Marvel Rivals’s playable roster is slowly expanding, with 37 playable characters after the next update. Although leaks hint at upcoming heroes, Wu’s response suggests that fans should take datamined information with a grain of salt. Regardless, with NetEase consistently adding new characters, players can expect their favorites to appear in the game sooner or later.
