Marvel Rivals [1] struck gold purely because of what the game is based on. Since the many Marvel Universes are ever-expanding and borderline constant, the developer has an unlimited amount of characters they can pick from, especially considering recent releases have proven the team doesn’t necessarily care about initial fame.
One of the many future champions who are slated to come to Marvel Rivals in the unforeseen future is Amaranth. Since she’s a relatively new character in the comics, it makes sense that some players may not know much about her. Fortunately, we’re here to go through her comic book lore and powers.
So, if you want to learn about Amaranth before she comes to Marvel Rivals, you’re at the right place.
Who is Amaranth in Marvel Comics?
Amaranth is a new magical character in the Marvel universe, but she is already turning heads. Unlike other leaked Marvel Rivals heroes like White Fox, who have been around for a decade, Amaranth debuted in 2024. She does not have a solo comic yet, but has been a big part of several comic runs like Scarlet Witch, Timeless, and Crypt of Shadows.
Her backstory is all about mystery and horror. Amaranth first appeared in Scarlet Witch (2024) #6, where she was brought to Wanda by Agatha Harkness, who was unusually fearful. Amaranth does not remember her past, just that she was taken in by a psychiatrist at 10. Over time, her presence alone drove the psychiatrist to madness, which is why she ran away to Agatha Harkness, who ended up sending her to Wanda. But Wanda, being the Scarlet Witch, saw her potential and decided to become her mentor.
As it turns out, Amaranth embodies two of Marvel’s most powerful magical forces: Chaos and Witchcraft. These forces clashed for ages, but after witnessing Wanda’s mother sacrifice herself to restore magic, they created a child between them to symbolize peace, that child being Amaranth. She was raised as a normal girl by a man named Philip Hawlut, who had no idea of her arcane origins.
Marvel adding her to Marvel Rivals this early is a strong sign. It feels like how Scarlet Witch started small but eventually grew into having one of the biggest cult followings. Marvel Rivals and the MCU did numbers for her reputation, and her witchy aesthetic and goth energy made her connect with fans who liked darker, mystical heroes. With Wanda also in the game, introducing Amaranth is Marvel’s way of expanding the Scarlet Witch legacy.
What makes Amaranth’s powers unique in the comics?
Amaranth’s powers are just as chaotic as her origins. Being the daughter of the abstract entities Witchcraft and Chaos, she has a deep, natural connection that sets her apart from even seasoned spellcasters. She can project and manipulate energy and is even able to fly. Being mentored by the Scarlet Witch only adds to her potential.
One of her rarest powers is the ability to cancel out other magic called Abjuration. Amaranth can pull this off on a whim, a feat that takes most mages years to master. A great example is when she shuts down the Eliminator’s self-destruct spell without even thinking, impressing the likes of Wanda.
She can also drive people insane simply by making eye contact with them. It is deeply unsettling and not something she can control, something her father and even the Black Cat have been hit by. This makes her highly unpredictable and dangerous.
Moreover, she has a chaotic side to her powers. When she came into contact with the Tri-Crown of the Chaos Godhead, a super-powerful artifact, it reacted to her as if she were overflowing with pure magical force.
But even with all this raw power, she can be weak to magical burnout. After a major overload, her powers can spiral out of control, and Wanda usually has to keep her in check when that happens.

How would Amaranth fit into Marvel Rivals?
Amaranth’s chaotic powers make her a perfect fit for the fast-paced action in Marvel Rivals. She is setting up to be a melee duelist character, which fits well with her character. Her leaked abilities give us a good idea of how she might fit into the Marvel Rivals meta.
First is Chaos Spike, which could use her raw and unpredictable magic, while Frenzied Deterrence could act as a reactive burst of energy when under pressure. It could be similar to Hela or Luna Snow with a chaotic edge.
Spell Counter will likely tap into her power of Abjuration to cancel out other magic. With this, Amaranth could threaten other spellcasters like Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, Magik, and Loki. It would add disruption and make her a massive team asset.
Chaos Rain could be her ultimate, an area-of-effect ability that damages and debuffs enemies. Overall, she could be a mix of Storm and Magneto with a magical twist.
FAQs
When will Amaranth come to Marvel Rivals?
Unfortunately, it’s unknown when Amaranth will come to Marvel Rivals. While she was leaked to be coming to the game thanks to mined date files, there’s no release date. Additionally, while the names of her moves are in the files, their details are absent, suggesting she may be in the planning phase currently.
Is Amaranth related to Scarlet Witch?
While Amaranth isn’t biologically related to Scarlet Witch, that doesn’t necessarily matter. In the comics, Wanda took Amaranth in after seeing her potential as a sorceress, suggesting the same will be true in Marvel Rivals. It’s unknown if they’ll make it so the playable Scarlet Witch is her mentor or if it’ll be an alternate version.
