Season 15 release date and new structure

Battle cannons and a crystal in League of Legends

Players can expect Season 15 of League of Legends to launch on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, considering previous seasons began around the same time frame. For example, Season 14 started on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, and Season 13 on Wednesday, January 11, 2023.

The upcoming season is called Season 1 since Riot Games [1] is starting the count again. Each year will have three seasons and two acts. Every season will focus on a region in League of Legends, with the first season concentrating on Noxus. Whenever a season focuses on a region, it integrates its lore into the game. For the Noxian season, the map will feature black and red Hextech-inspirited turrets, a shopkeeper designed in Noxian style, and more.

Players will see these thematic changes in the game’s client. The client will become more streamlined, allowing gamers to check event progress and season goals.

Patch naming scheme

From Season 15 onward, League of Legends will use a new naming scheme for its patches. Instead of being in the season/patch format (like 14.23), they will be year/season/patch. The first patch of 2025 Season 1 is named 25.S1.1.

Feats of Strength

A fierce warrior with a strong presence.

League of Legends is replacing the first blood and first tower gold bonuses with a new mechanic titled Feats of Strength. If the player’s team gets first blood, first tower, or first epic jungle monster like Herald, Voidgrubs, etc.), they can access new boot upgrades.

Various boots with their respective prices in League of Legends

First, gamers’ tier-two boots will get a stat boost. After finishing two legendary items, they can upgrade their boots to the third tier. Tier three items will introduce new buffs, motivating players to focus on different objectives. For example, the second tier bonus with Plated Steelcaps is +5 Armor, and the third tier provides +5 Armor, +5 Movement Speed, and a passive that gives 10% max health physical shield for five seconds after taking physical damage from a champion.

Atakhan, Bringer of Ruin

A mystical red entity with multiple arms in a fantasy game scene.

Atakhan is a new epic jungle monster that teams can slay during League of Legends matches. He replaces the Baron Nashor at the 20-minute mark, with the Nashor being relocated to the 25-minute mark. Atakhan has two forms. The form teams have to kill depends on how the match is going.

Ruinous Atakhan spawns in high-action games where players have already gotten numerous kills and objectives. It amplifies monster buffs and gives players Blood Roses, a new plant type that grants teams XP and Adaptive Force.

Voracious Atakhan comes in low-action games with teams that are playing passively. Although it deals less damage than its other form, it drops Blood Roses and a Guardian Angel-style revive when killed.

The Ruinous Atakhan will spawn in the top river and the Voracious in the bottom river.

Nexus turrets

Like inhibitors, Nexus turrets will respawn with max health sometime after they are destroyed. This change can spice up matches because it allows losing teams to make a comeback and eventually leave their base without the fear of someone on the enemy team sneakily coming to destroy the Nexus.

Rune System overhaul

A character from League of Legends encountering an area with grass.

The rune system is getting numerous changes in the upcoming season. Older runes like Nullifying Orbs, Eyeball Collector, Zombie Ward, and Ghost Poro are gone. They’re replaced with the following runes:

Teleport changes

Standard Teleport is slower than its upgraded version, the Unleashed Teleport. However, the Standard teleport can target minions and wards before it gets upgraded, allowing gamers to strategically traverse the map and make players earlier in the game to keep its utility.

Ranked Gameplay Rewards

Overview of ranks and queues in League of Legends, displaying tiers and divisions.

Ranked gameplay returns to a single annual reset, as opposed to the three-split system in earlier seasons. Players can earn up to three Victorious skins, each one for every mini-season. Players must win 15 ranked games during a single mini-season to get these skins.

Loot system overhaul

The Hextech and masterwork chests are getting removed for a new loot system with a permanent battle pass. Like other games, the battle pass will change every act, including free and premium rewards.

Swiftplay

League of Legends chest interface with materials and champions

The new season will debut a new Swiftplay-like mode. It’ll be similar to Summoner’s Rift matches but faster by giving players more gold and XP with shorter objective timers. Switplay will replace Quickplay in regions with an always-on unranked SR queue before being rolled out internationally.

Practice Tool

Season 15 may include a practice tool where players can set up specific conditions and modifiers in a controlled environment to test out new strategies or brush up on mechanics.
