With all the collaborations and events the game continues to come out with, coupled with the Fortnite cross-ownership, it’s understandable that many newcomers are confused about how they can best polish their Rocket League skills.

Today, we’re here to go through ten tips that are sure to help every Rocket League newbie catch their bearing. These tips range from basic and obvious ones like avoiding getting tilted, as well as some newcomers tend to overlook like keeping an eye on the boost gauge. By the end, you should be able to comfortably score some goals against actual players.

The best 10 tips every new Rocket League player should follow

The learning curve for Rocket League is steep, and it can take years before someone masters the game. Luckily, a few tips can help everyone climb the ranks quickly.

5. Use a controller!

While this tip doesn’t apply to console users, it does for PC players. Mouse and keyboard are easier for first-timers compared to controllers, but the former has many disadvantages in the long run.

MnK won’t allow players to be precise with their movements, whether turning or speeding up because the control scheme only uses direct buttons rather than analog sticks or pressure-sensitive triggers. Furthermore, players with controllers can move the camera around easily when the ball cam is disabled, giving them a better understanding of what’s happening around them.

4. Select the Octane

Rocket League has a lot of customizable options that let players change things from their car’s tires to the entire chassis. Although every customization is purely cosmetic, the car’s chassis changes the hitbox, affecting how the vehicle will interact with the ball or whether it will hit it at all.

Players unanimously agree that The Octane is the best option for a car chassis because it has no weaknesses. Octane’s ship makes it a great all-rounder that can let players do almost anything with a low chance of fumbling.

3. Keep an eye on the boost gauge

The boost meter isn’t that important in lower ranks, but managing it is essential as the rank gets higher. Knowing when to deplete the boost fully or when to save some can be the difference between winning and losing, so always look at the nearest boost pad and check if it’s recharged. Remember that every large boost pad recharges after 10 seconds.

A full boost gauge lets players move around the map quickly and do aerials and saves in the match.

2. Utilize the training mode

Rocket League features a training mode that lets players practice various scenarios they will encounter in matches, like aerials, shooting, and defending. Start every exercise from the Rookie difficulty, and when perfectly done in a single go, try the next difficulty. Do this for every scenario and difficulty until even the All-Star setting becomes easy.

After conquering every scenario and difficulty, players must play those modes whenever waiting for a match so that they don’t get rusty.

1. Avoid getting tilted

Not getting tilted in competitive games is easier said than done, but it’s essential if someone wants to become a pro at that title. Missing easy shots or saves can be frustrating, or having teammates that make silly mistakes, but that doesn’t mean it should ruin the player’s mood. Once tilted, it’s easier to make errors that players normally won’t make, so take a breather and carry on.

Also, don’t be mean to random teammates because negative reinforcement usually breaks up the team, letting the opponent easily. Just tell teammates what they’re doing wrong without sounding condescending.
